Illuminated sill plates Repair

Drivers side sill plate did not light up having looked at the cost of replacing I thought a repair would be worthwhile.
Ordered some 5050 12v strip lights - 30cm long of the internet - £3.99 for 4 blue ones.

Took trim strip off , it is held by 4 clips and can be gently levered upwards to release them. au clipped the feed wire and into the workshop with it. Cut the wires near the black box leaving plenty to reconnect to. Black box and silver light trim pulled off and cleaned up glue residue. I also took out the clear Perspex strip to clean up - this needs to be carefully prised out so you don’t break it, mine was dirty if yours is clean I would leave it in place.

Glued Perspex back in place with contact adhesive.

I attached the led strip to the inside of the aluminium strip opposite the Perspex. I tried attaching the led next to the Perspex but the leds didn’t line up correctly with the lettering. Note the led is polarity sensitive so you need to wire it and make sure it works before final connection to the existing connector off the old light fitting.

Installation requires the plastic pegs to be carefully lined up after reconnecting the lights then pr Bow down sing firmly in place.
Picture was taken in broad daylight and looks good - need darkness tonight for final verdict. Will probably update the passenger side next.

Can you link to the strip lights you used?

I have a broken pair that I've been trying to repair, but the electroluminescent tape I bought online is useless. Even worse than the original.

I bought a replacement pair, but they're not very bright either, especially with LED puddle lights. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

eBay - 12v 5050 led strip light. I got it off Wow Factor
They come in either 10cm or 30cm length - I used 30cm, and come in various colours white, blue, red, green and warm white - mine are blue.

The 5050 is the led size 5mm x 5mm. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

I believe they fit all, obviously if yours didn't have them originally you'll need to source a power feed for them - I believe folks take a feed of the knee level courtesy lights. 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped Smile

France 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 V8 Santorini Black

Thanks for this repair guide - my passenger side EL has failed and I wondered if anyone had been able to source a new EL assembly. I might drop a line to GSM Industrial Graphics as they seem to be the 3rd party supplier, see if they can sell me an EL strip.... you never know!

Cheers,
J.

FWIW I spoke with GSM today. They were very pleasant and helpful, but they only deal with the car manufacturers directly so can't supply replacement EL units to the "public".

They told me that their EL units are made in-house.

Let the search for a Far East alternative begin Very Happy
