I'm not sure EL is really bright enough for this application. I bought a new set of sill plates and I can still barely tell they're illuminated. The LED puddle lights probably don't help.

The 5050 led strips I used are really bright - helped with being blue they really stand out. Very good value less than £10 for 4 x 30 cm lengths, only needed 2 to do the job but thought would have some spares! The light, when I open the doors
