My alarm has gone off a couple of times out of the blue and the car thinks the bonnet is open..

Car has been parked up for 1 week whilst i recover from shoulder operation and the alarm started going off, unlocked the car and it wouldn't let me lock it again so i turned ignition on and it was flashing up saying bonnet is open,


Opened the bonnet and pressed the sensor latch up and down and few times and then car locked up fine...

Do i just need to get a new sensor or is there other parts to this system?

I did a quick google image search and all the bonnet sensors for l322 looked different to mine?

Mine is the same as the bmw one plug and one pokey stick on a spring that goes up ad down lol, excuse the poor description.. Regards

common problem..... so you could,

clean the bonnet switch,
connect the two wires together,
replace the switch,
or leave it as is and annoy the neighbours at 3 in the morning... ... - .- -.

Had this with a disco 4. Not what you want to see when doing 70(ish) on the motorway: Bonnet open....... :O

Initially shorted it out to stop the alarm going off (as it is always about 3am, ended up taking the keys to bed). Long term, just replaced the latch and sensor and all was fine again. Current: RR L322 2010
Past: RR L405 2017, RR L322 2012, 2008 & 2004, 2018 D5, 2016 Defender, 2011 D4, a few Disco2s, P38, RR Classic, couple of Disco1's, SIII SWB

Deffo not what you want to see on the motorway lol.

Replaced the latch as well??

On the disco 4 (mine anyway) there were 2 latches, one each side, but only one had the sensor on so was easier on that to just replace the whole unit. A couple of bolts, remove the paperclip and insulating tape used to short the sensor cable out and then plug it in. Trickiest part was getting the release wire into the new latch from memory but it wasn't that hard either. Current: RR L322 2010

Ah ok sounds like it must be different to the l322 the. As I think that the latch just holds the bonnets closed on these and the sensor is a separate part .. Regards

New bonnet closed switch is only £18 so I’ve just ordered one.

I’m guessing it’s only that 1 plug on the rear of it ? And also that there is nothing else which is part of this system?

The latches are just mechanical latches right?

Same issue here a couple of years ago, quick fix is to just stick a rubber pad or something onto the bonnet to ensure the switch is pushed down properly after just touching up the contact point on the bonnet that may have worn the paint away.

Ours hasn’t gone off since and that was a couple of year ago.

I put a rubber gromit on the plunger thing....made it artificially longer...no issues since.

The bonnet also gets hot in the sun....and if the switch is on the edge....as it were..... that’s enough to trigger it.

The bonnet open sensor is on driver side firewall near the brake booster.

In my case on my 2008 model the alarm was sounding because the bracket holding the sensor had a crack in it which allowed the sensor to drop when bonnet was closed. When opened it would spring back into place like nothing was physically wrong.

I never got around to fixing the problem and just pulled the plug out of the switch and removed the switch entirely.

I note the bracket design changed on the 2010 facelift model, but it’s the same BMW branded switch. ______________________________

Had the same problem with my 2012 Westie this weekend. Got a replacement switch and the new one seems to have a longer button by about 0.5cm vs the old one so hopefully that does the trick.

I had the same issue early in lockdown. I thought it was the battery running down initially, but it wasn't! I disconnected the connector on the back of the bonnet switch, bridged across with some wire and taped it up. No issues since. I will get around to replacing at some point! Rob 05 L322 4.2SC
