UK motorbike license with Euro car license.

Hi Gang,

it’s arguably not the best site to ask, but here’s my question:
I want to get my ‘A’ motorbike licence in the UK. I do have a euro car drivers licence.
It appears I need a UK car drivers licence to apply to the UK Bike drivers licence and the CBT - see below:

"Thank you for your enquiry. You will need a UK driving licence number to be able to take a CBT and bike licence. You will need a CBT. To carry on and take training and tests for the Direct Access Course you will need to have passed a Motorcycle Theory Test. You will need to book that independently through the DVSA. The cost of the Theory is £23."

I feel it is a bit odd - aren't there are people in the UK only willing to run a bike and who do not have a car driver’s licence?

Anyone else with the same matter out here?

I know I can exchange my Euro licence for a UK one, but I do need it for work/insurance purpose in europe.

You need to exchange your licence for a uk one as you quoted in your post i own and run my own bike training school....no uk licence then no way of taking a cbt, theory test or cat A bike test without it.

Hope that helps but you all ready new the answer

The absolute bare minimum to initiate a CBT is the UK provisional licence. It will become a receptacle for the bike licence pre test, after the successful test you should get a full bike licence but in what form I’m not sure.

You don’t have to be a car driver to be a bike rider, although I do agree that they could change the title from driving licence to something more descriptive of the task, but they probably just decided upon driving licence as a catch all.

Mind you my daughter when she was small used to ask me if I was driving my motorbike that day - bless Very Happy ______________________________

Thanks, much appreciated - I will do indeed.
However, just out of curiosity, should a UK resident whish to pass his motorbike licence, yet DOES NOT have a car licence - say he lives in the city and doesn't want a car (like most millennials do, hum, hum...), couldn't he get a motorbike license? in other words, do you have to be a car driver to be a motorcyclist in the UK (it is not the case in Europe or the States for instance)? l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

No Weggie, it would require me being in says France for too many days, weeks apart etc. I can manage it all in the UK locally easily.

I have vehicles insured in France and in the USA with my Euro licence and I am worried tht changing my licence to a UK one will be a problem, in particular for the French vehicles' insurance. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

How many bikers on here got a bike licence before their car one??

Can you not, if you pass the requirements of domicile or whatever it is today, get a bike test done? And do you need to tell the DVLA you have another licence abroad?? Cheers
Richard

I’ve been having a read up and it looks like you only have two options,

Exchange your euro licence in the U.K. (this will then be returned to the supplying authority) then take and pass your bike test in the U.K. or

Take your bike test in Euro land then you should be able to ride in Blighty with no problems.

I think that’s the up shot. ______________________________

You don't HAVE to have a car license to get motorcycle license just a UK provisional but you would need to be eligible to apply for that (not sure what that would require) 2010 L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue Stornaway Grey

As I said earlier you do just need a U.K. provisional licence but as the OP has already got a full licence albeit at the moment a euro one he has to surrender that for a U.K. full licence to be able to start bike training in the U.K. This is because apparently you cant go backwards, full to provisional and you certainly can’t have both. ______________________________

Just found this -

This is a requirement to take a bike test..

European licence holders in UK?
European licence holders must complete a D1 form and gain a UK licence and counterpart.
What you need to do if you have a EU issued licence
Complete the application form D1
The D1 form is available from the Post Office or online DVLA online form ordering (tick D1 pack)
Enclose original identity documentation confirming your identity
Enclose one passport sized colour photograph
Enclose the fee of £50.00, cheque or postal orders made payable to ‘DVLA, Swansea
Enclose your current driving licence (this will be returned to the issuing licensing authority)
Send your completed application to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BT or you may be able to use the premium checking service
What happens next
Your new driving licence will normally be issued within 15 working days from the day the DVLA receives your application
All the entitlements you have from your original EU country where you passed your car or other tests will remain, and you can change the licence back should you return to your home country to live, or if you become resident in another EU country. ______________________________

Understood

I have vehicles insured in France and in the USA with my Euro licence and I am worried tht changing my licence to a UK one will be a problem, in particular for the French vehicles' insurance.

A UK licence would currently be no problem for French insurance. MOH insures the FF in her name and she retains her UK licence. The insurance co. show no interest in the D/L When the Td6 was written off there were no questions about D/Ls.

The US insurance may be different. John

^^^Weegie, I gather your other half is British living in France.
I am French (living in the UK) with vehicles in France, therefore they'll require a local DL - which makes sense really.

The US one shouldn't be any trouble since my licence is already foreign anyway.

Cheers guys. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Surely its a driving licence with entitlements, not a car or motor bike licence. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.
