To flush or not to flush! That is the question!

What’s your opinion on gearbox servicing? Should I get a mega flush done on my 4.2 supercharged or just drop the oil and new filter? I can’t decide which route to go tbh guys

i will do oil and new filter on mine @ 60ish K same as i did on the last one. my reason being i dont want all the deposits being cleaned off the components in the box and then floating about causing problems later with the new detergents cleaning everything. Cheers

James

When flushing, detergents should not be used with the 6/8HP boxes...

This is the best explanation I can find of flushing versus drain/refill Thumbs Up

Quote:
do an experiment, take a 500ml drinks bottle fill it with water and add 10ml of blue food colouring, the water is the good fluid the food dye is the contaminants.
It should be a deep blue now,

Pour half of it away and add 250ml of water.... what colour is the liquid in the bottle?

now do it again,

And again,

And again,

each time you do it, youre changing a percentage.... the first time 50%, the next 75%, 87.5%, 93.75% 96.88%, the official figure for out equipment is 98%.... and we didnt use £1100 worth of fluid to get it....

imagine that’s 7litres of £30 per litre fluid everytime you do it... and the fluid is still dirty and contaminated, and you’ve spent £850 on fluid.....
The flush procedure is as effective as changing half the fluid 5times, all in one go using half the amount of fluid.

(Prices based on an 8 speed ZF, but the basics are the same)

I was always told that the best method was to drop the oil and replace. Do a couple of hundred miles then drop the oil again, remove the sump, replace the filter and refil.

Just to add my tuppence worth :
If you look at the ZF documentation, they recommend an oil & filter / pan change NOT flushing.
It doesn't necessarily mean they're against flushing, but all of their gearbox durability / life testing will have been based on their recommended method of servicing at their recommended intervals.
Flushing done well, obviously works.
Flushing done badly I'm sure can do harm.
A "standard" auto transmission oil & filter change is hard to mess up, other than incorrect amount of oil put back in, but that should be manageable if you've got the "skills" to get the car in the air safely. Paul,

As ever, make your own mind up with the evidence presented Thumbs Up
For me, a lot of very experienced LR mechanics like Mikey and Bodsy etc offer a professional Megaflush service. That's enough for me as a knowledgeable enthusiast Thumbs Up If they need advice from a Chartered Biologist then I'm their man Rolling with laughter Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
