Intermittent Air Conditioning

My Air con has stopped working properly so I took it in to have the gas checked while I waited at a local garage who do air con.
Their machine removed and measured and refilled the gas and confirm the correct amount of gas is in there but it was still not cooling so they needed to rebook to have a further look. Its going in this Wednesday.
Thing is I'm sure on occasions whilst using it the last week I'm sure it has cut in briefly as I've had an odd icy blast!
So the way I see it surely it must be either a pressure switch problem or the compressor or compressor clutch.
Is there an easy way to diagnose what the problem is? I have a GAP tool if there is anything in there which might give it away?
Or is there a known issue with a particular component on these vehicles?
I'm just worried the garage might spend a long time clutching at straws at my expense!!
Thanks in anticipation.
Paul.

There was an issue with the l322's where the aircon takes around 5-10mins to become icy cold. Mine was the same although I never bothered to fix it.

Something to do with a part on the back of the compressor of I remember correctly...

Have you whacked the air con onto max with control knobs at 16 degrees, full fan ?

Do you get cold air then ? .

Had it to the max using max air con button which puts full fan on and temp knob as low as it goes but still no joy!

Hmmm sounds like compressor not kicking in

On my TD6 I could watch it kick in (and hear it) from above, but not sure you can do the same on yours. .

The valve on the compressor is probably at fault. Those that have had it done/done it say the compressor has to come out, which is a pain. So changing the whole unit rather than the valve is the better option.

As millerj90 says, it's probably the valve. The 2010 facelift ones have a different mechanism on the compressor whereby it doesn't have a clutch and runs all the time with the output being controlled by a valve. This valve was a bit iffy and begins to stick. There is an updated part available but the compressor needs to come out to replace it.

It's quite an involved job to remove the compressor and therefore expensive. For the little extra cost involved, I had my compressor replaced rather than just messing about with the valve. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Thanks folks that's exactly the kind of info I was after. I think I'd better start looking for a new compressor!
