Alternator help

Hi all. I have tested the voltage on my alternator and previously it always showed above 14 but now it seems to be down to around 13.3 to 13.5 ish. Is this still ok or is it on its way out? I always thought it would work then go but do they slowly deteriorate and then let go? Thanks Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

I think the charging voltage should be about 14.5, it is on mine although it's an 11 TDV8. Slightly different charging system. I would expect you end up stopped with 12.5 or so at the battery after a good run.

ISTR there are a few threads about the alternator failing, but being able to replace diodes? to repair. Have a search and let us know. Cheers

Thanks will have a search around and see what I can find on here. Could be near new battery time after 4 years on this one too but it's been well maintained and refreshed using my ctek but nothing lasts forever. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

2007 seems to have been a bad year for alternators - so if you're still on the original, you've done well

Thanks. From memory it's been replaced before under warranty so isn't the original. Will try clean up the terminals on the battery and see if this helps. I'm getting no other symptoms of a failing alternator but from ready the other post they just seem to go without warning. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Thinking on the battery, it could be part of the problem. When my alternator went the battery failed few months later. It was under 18 months old and was replaced under the battery warranty. Can't seem to find the voltages I took at the time.

Could the alternator that failed on yours previously have affected the battery and it's showing up now? May be worth taking a punt on a new one, or at least having it tested at a supplier as a first option Cheers

A Trap

My volts are around 13.5v and maintains the battery at ~12.5v so don’t go rushing to replace things.

I believe there are a few different specs for alternator charging voltages for our vehicles.

Thanks will keep an eye on it before getting my hands dirty.

The battery was new when I got the car and the alternator was done before I had it so it won't have been effected by the previous failure. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Charge voltage

Hi there
I have two L322 which give out slightly differing charging voltages. 13.7 ish and 14.2v
I do recall reading that it also depends on state of battery charge.
One has a new battery and one a two year old battery.
Have you turned the full amount of electric items on and monitored the voltage?
So long as you alternator keeps the charging voltage then you should be fine.
Google it there are some good videos on YouTube on how to check this.
Good luck hope this helped.

The electrics on these show some weird reactions to voltage fluctuations. I recently noticed that when I started the car in the mornings I briefly got a message hdc inoperable. Been like that for weeks but no issues driving or starting. Around the same time the radio started playing up couldn’t get a signal on radio 2 and several other stations where intermittent reception.
Then on Wednesday evening the battery light came on and within a few miles every warning on the dash was lit up and it went into limp mode. RAC put diagnostics on it only 10.2v output on the alternator fitted new alternator today now chucking out 14.5 v and everything is back to normal and I have about a dozen radio stations to choose from instead of 3. Oh and I now have a signal on the tv which had also vanished!
Strange.
