From PLG to PHGV..........and beyond

Dear Oracles Bow down

I have been trying to find a way to up-rate my L322 to be ‘legally’ able to tow a box trailer more than 7 metres in length (excluding the ‘A’ frame) it is not more than 2.5t when ladden.

I see lots of ‘travelling folk’ towing their German caravans about our green and pleasant lands and I see many glider trailers all be being towed by vehicles that I suspect are GVW of under 3.5 tonnes. According to the gov.uk website AND my insurer, who frankly is the opinion that I worry about, only PHGV or HGV (a vehicle that is plated to carry over 3500kg) are legal to do this.

I am willing to consider the additional costs to modify my my 3.6 TDV8 with brake upgrades, suspension upgrades as all are better that driving to competitions and events in a tipper Transit van. Big Cry

I have searched high and low and even spoken to the UK importers of the German caravans they all say “you need to get a commercial van.” Censored

There is plenty advise for updating motorhomes but Surely there is a way the L322 can do this. We all know Is is capable but how can I do it legally?

Thank you in advance. 2006 L322 3.6 TDV8

I know which makes more mess.

Having done some quick research, I think the answer is you must have a vehicle over 3500 kg.

As far as I know you are allowed to have an overhanging load from your trailer - that's how rowing boats are towed, but I dont know if that would help?

I've looked into trailer lengths a few times over the years, and I think your research is accurate in showing the maximum length rules.

The only exception I found is that a trailer may exceed the 7m rule if it is specifically designed and used for carrying a load in excess of that length that is indivisble. Hence glider trailers being out and about.

And anyway, a tipper Transit would allow you to put the kids in the back and make mucking them out easy, tip, hose and job done Razz Cheers
