Indecisive Transmission on L322 (BMW RR Vogue)

Hi All,

Upto a week ago my L322 changed gear smoothly and positively. Now, it has become indecisive. If I drive a 50mph, light footed on a level road, the revs used to remain glued to the 1750rpm mark. Now, the revs will jump up 100rpm, then drop down again. At 30 MPH, she will change up a gear, then back down again. The gear change is not the silky smooth operation as before, but is quite 'notchy'. What do you think has gone wrong and what can I do to fix this?

How sure are you that your transmission is shifting gear? Could it not be the torque converter lock-up clutch that you’re feeling?

Hi, obviously can't say for definite but the symptoms are very similar to the one's my 2006 TD6 had and I ended up having the gearbox and torque converter refurbished. These boxes are "sealed for life" supposedly and for years you couldn't get a service kit. These are now readily available, but maybe the damage has been done on yours?
This is a common problem as you can find out on this site. You don't say what mileage your RR has covered but these sort of problems usually occur around the 100,000 mark. If yours has done more than this and had no previous problems you have been lucky.
If it does come down to having the box / torque converter refurbished, do shop about. There will be members of this group in your area who can probably point you in the direction of a reputable gearbox guy. Cost is usually between £1500 - £2000. Sounds a lot, but if done properly it'll be trouble free for many more miles....especially if you tow. Good luck. Don't jump until you have done some good research. Thumbs Up

Select the 4x4 Info screen on the centre console display and check that the Hi/Lo ratio indication isn't flipping between Hi and Lo due to a problem with the transfer box motor potentiometer (or associated wiring). If the ECU thinks it's in Lo ratio then it disengages the torque converter lock-up clutch, so if its flipping between Hi and Lo then the clutch disengages then engages again then disengages, and the RPM jumps about accordingly.

Hi Guys,

This is only the second automatic I have owned and the first to demonstrate problems so I'm not really sure which part of the transmission train is having problems. She is a 2004 TD6 and has done 178,000 miles. I don't know her previous service history. I checked the centre console display - on board computer. I don't have a 4x4 info screen. I locked her in Lo ratio using the switch in front of the gear shift. She revved like a good 'un but the revs held steady. When switching between Hi and Lo ratios you could easily hear and feel the ratios changing.

Next I am going to test in sport mode to lock her in a specific gear and see what the revs do.

When was the transmission (gearbox) oil / and the transfer box oil last changed ? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I don't know if the oil has ever been changed. There are no sign of oil leaks under the engine or transmission train.

Hi Guys,

Nope, same thing happened. The gear change in sport mode is silky smooth but crusing at 50mph in 5th and the revs fluctuate between 1750rpm and 2000rpm.
