My 2010 5.0 SC has a strange vibration issue, which I'm still looking at the dealer to rectify as I haven't had it long. The dealer is being 100% cooperative on this but neither of us know where to go next.

The day I picked it up, I noticed a slight vibration at the rim of the steering wheel, at around mid-60's mph. I hadn't seen this on the test drive but it wasn't until I was settled into a cruise that it became apparent. The dealer took it back in, re-balanced the wheels, checked the wheel alignment, and handed it back. However, as soon as I did a motorway trip in it, it was there again. It's progressed (worsened) slightly now such that the whole car is vibrating/juddering slightly at anything between low-60s to 75mph. The best way I can describe it is like a muted feeling of driving over a cattle grid. It's nowhere near as severe as a cattle grid but it's the same type of feeling. You can feel it through the seat, through your backside, when driving it.

I know I'm not imagining it, because last weekend MrsC drove the car for the first time, on her own, and when she got home she said, with no prompting from me, "I thought the vibration thing had been fixed? It still does it."

I've had the wheels balanced again and the tyres inspected visually; all is well in that respect but the car still does it. We're all assuming that it's not a buckled wheel as that would have shown up on the balancer. No other damage visible.

The dealer has said he'll take it it back in for further investigation but is stumped as to what it could be. Anyone have any pointers I can share with him?

It has been suggested on other threads that it could be a sticking brake caliper. I did have a "cattle grid" effect on my Td6 which was down to a sticking caliper.

Check the wheels for higher temperature on one of them after a run. John

+1 for sticky caliper and probably very worn pads...on that corner .

Thanks gents. That's a really good shout. I don't know why I didn't think of that; I had a similar issue on my previous L322, that was a stuck rear caliper, it got quite bad before we managed to work out what it was and have the callipers rebuilt. Not an expensive job either (for the rears, anyway). I'll certainly pass that on.

Exactly the same happened to me with my 4.2 SC. Twice. Both instances were rear calipers sticking. Si. <This is my name.

Mine is doing exactly this, although weirdly sometimes it doesn't!

i had the same on my td6 it was a front caliper

Finally got it sorted yesterday - binding rear calliper! Back to smoothness now, I hope (not really had a chance to test it at the same speeds yet). But I'm pretty confident. 5.0 S/C Autobiography - now gone to pastures new....
