I took mine on a trailer to the dealer which was expensive but the next two times they came out to me with a testbook laptop and it takes about 3 minutes. I have since bought a faultmate.
Check if the GAP IID will do it as a dealer visit still used to cost me £100.
Good luck

Hi holiday I'm hoping this gets sorted next week I also have a disco 3 an rrs and have no problems with any of them you say yours has been done 3 times that's worrying I've had this l322 a month an not got it on the road yet. I might look in to the faultmate unit. I have a isoftcar reader for service lights ect bit of a chocolate teapot really no use at all for anything else. Rolling with laughter

Mine has done it quite a few times but only after disconnecting the battery or trying to start with a very flat battery. I suspect it has a faulty EWS immobiliser that loses the code when power is disconnected, that or the engine ECU. Hopefully yours is the same fault and easily rectified with the reprogram. It was quite rare when mine did it first 5 or so years ago and I could only find a few references worldwide including the X5 forums but it seems to be more common now. I wish I had the time to really find out why but since I managed to pick up the faultmate at a reasonable price I just reprogram it.
Strange thing is it doesn’t do it every time now.
I can’t even lend anyone the faultmate as it’s vin locked which is understandable.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

All done in 5 minutes running nicely now. BUT I do have this thing with the steering column making a hissing noise and going up or down when I turn the ignition on/off off-sometimes. Can I turn the auto function off or do I need special equipment. Tai

You should be able to link the position to your individual key but it will adjust each time you get in using that key unless you set the position to right at the top which is where mine returns to when ignition switched off.
i think it isi set by the buttons on the drivers seat panel, check the manual.
The steering column adjust is another common failure along with everything inside and outside of the car..

The steering ECU is tied in with your immobiliser ECU that you have just reprogrammed ....

Hi all steering now sorted. Bow down the next issue I have is the fuel pump is now running continually sounds quite loud from outside I did have the old one out and broke the hose connection on the top so I bought a replacement on the bay which had a pump in it which worked so I put it in. Now could it be a faulty valve in the pump which is not holding pressure or another issue any ideas on testing it.
