Does anyone know what this is and does the L405 have it as standard. If I wanted to fit an aftermarket tow bar I understand that towing prep may be needed. Geoff

You're showing an L322 in your profile so I assume you are looking to buy a later L405. In the L322 the towing prep is a grey socket in the left hand rear of the wheel well, no doubt with all the electrickery that entails. Plug in the relevant connection set from a tow bar supplier and it's good to go. You can find out of the car has a prep kit if you can access vindecoderz.com for the L322 with the VIN. This may be the same for an L405, in which case you simply plug in. There may be a coding issue but not sure on the L405.

A call to the LR dealers/helpless line may have the info for you about your L405.

Yep, I still have my trusty (not rusty) L322 but purchase of L405 being considered and towbar essential. I would like a deployable but I can get a fixed one fitted pretty cheaply. Geoff

Sounds a good idea, but still happy with my fixed. One point I am considering is to buy a "farmers' hitch" to allow a protector for the bumper to be fitted. So far not damaged it but time will come.

I seem to remember reading something, possibly on here, that because the L405 has an aluminium boot floor structure you have to have some sort of additional (and expensive) frame to be able to fit a towbar if it was not factory fitted.

I think this is what they called towbar prep, so a bit more complex than the L322. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

Yes Rob you are correct sir... The 405 needs a steel cage fitted around the boot floor/battery tray as the shell is Aluminium and would flex too much i guess... The Towbars i have seen all come with such a device and all the bolt holes are already printed into the chassis to fit said strengthening cage...

Just to add, pre 2015 L405's do not have diagnostics capability for fitting a deployable tow bar so, if you buy and retrofit one you will need the pairing/setting procedure from topix

And lastly the electrics should just plug in and work

I’m looking to fit one to my 2013 autobiography L405, from what I understand from the post it should work without coding however pairing/setting I’m not sure on

And I will never know (unless someone on here knows)

Interesting. Like Geoff a 405 has caught my eye, but I too would prefer to have a towbar.
I will watch this thread with interest & comment if I have anything I can add.
May I please ask a question ? (don’t wish to hijack / go off thread).
Am I right in thinking different tow weight limits apply to fixed v. deployable tow balls ? Have looked, but cannot find simply answer !

The handbook says that the max trailer weight off-road for the powered tow ball is limited to 1000kg. It also says that the max nose weight is 200kg instead of 250kg for trailers with overrun brakes. Everything else is the same for both.
