I put a replacement 2004 X5 engine into my FF last year, just needed the sump changing over. Whether the X5 and 540 engines are the same block and interchangable, is probably a question for a BMW forum. David

I have a couple of M62TUB35 engines to play with and one is out of a 535. You will need to check the right hand engine mount looking from the front as the X5 will use the same larger longer engine mount where the 540 might be shorter, if you have a photo I can tell you. Sump for sure as already mentioned and I think oil pump.
Depending on Year of donor it may not be the TU vanos version so you would need to swap the heads and all the timing chain gear. Also the 540 had the PCV valve behind the timing cover I think rather than at the rear on the rangey but I think that can be removed.
You probably have more questions now than before you asked. Very Happy
If you can get photos of the engine I can tell you more.

This is not an add so I apologise if anyone may think otherwise. Thumbs Up

Hi Robo

How much is the second hand engine going to cost roughly?

I am about to trade in my 2004 4.4 LPG Fitted Vogue which my brother fitted a new engine to 6 years ago, and it has done about 40K if that since. I put on 4 brand new Pirelli 19" tyres 4 months ago and they have covered about 1000 miles if that. It may be an idea to buy a donor and take what you like off it as you know it will all fit and sell the rest?

Just a thought!!! it is running well just a bit rusty now with being in Scotland Big Cry Big Cry

If you need any info just ask Thumbs Up
