Deployable steps - fuse and control module locations

Got an issue with my steps - which essentially have stopped working and appear to have no power. There's a longer story here about a MD who gave my car back with this issue having "not touched them" but I'll post about that later/elsewhere. For now I have two questions to try to see some stuff for myself.

Presumably there is a fuse somewhere for the steps - anyone know which one where? I couldn't see anything labelled as steps in the glove box or o/s rear fuse boxes.
Where is the control module located? Is it easy to get at or would I have to remove half the dash or worse?

I asked that when I took the car back to them and was told "they cannot be turned off". How would I turn them on if they have in fact been turned off? Looked with the IID tool and found nothing obvious... Mike - MPx

Well it's in the book (apparently)

Switching the steps on and off:

With the ignition off, press and hold the steps button first and then turn the ignition on. each time you do this, it cycles the steps system on and off. When switching from off to on, the switch light should flash 3 times. When switching from on to off, it should flash 2 times. Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

That's very helpful thanks Bushy30....and has even gotten me to break out the manual(!) Doh! Sadly to no avail. I get no light on the switch no matter what I do with the ignition or how long I hold it for. I noticed they could have been inhibited through terrain response as well (not that the car is currently in any special program) but that had no effect either. The symptom looks like complete lack of power. Mike - MPx

Having fitted them as a retrofit -- I'm not sure where stuff is from a factory fit, so I'm not much further help -- I don't even know what fuse it uses, but it must pre-exist for other things too as when retrofitting you don't fit a fuse!

Power is drawn from (pin 19 I think) on the big blue connector if the front fuse box Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Stan it was just in for Annual Service and MOT. They managed to find a reason to do about £1500 worth of additional work for the MOT (one rear brake and one front track rod arm plus 4 wheel alignment).

I'd asked them to look at the side steps as the nearside was only deploying properly about half of the time - and the offside failing just occasionally. They advised that "side step sticking in operation and motor seizing" - fix for £725.11 per side which I declined. When the car was returned there was no life in the steps at all. Nearside is partially extended, offside properly parked. I returned the car to them asking them to put the steps back into the state they were in when they got the car (ie working intermittently at worst) - which was the point at which the defensiveness and non-credible excuses/explanations went into overdrive.

Obviously I could return it again and say the same words much louder or similar but I think I'd rather find out what's really wrong and fix it myself (or via an indie) as clearly I now have absolutely no trust in what they say to me. From searching on here I see that I can get a new pair of steps and new control Module for £310 from Craddocks so I may just go for that as it would (hopefully) be an easy swap which replaces everything that may have failed - but only if there is some power available! Mike - MPx

definitely sounds like their diagnosis process killed your steps..

i would think that they messed about with the connections underneath so might be worth a check there..

Very helpful thanks Tinman. For the MY10 on shows the power take off from Pin 19 as Bushy30 said and the control module should be behind the panel in the drivers side footwell. Seems unlikely that they would have taken anything significant apart inside so will check the easy to see connectors as Stan suggests. I guess they could have fried the control module (or it coincidentally chose the moment of their tenure to give up)...or something else has become disconnected. Apart from the steps the car is all good at the mo so unlikely to be a shared fuse. Will try to do some further investigation later as long as the rain holds off... Mike - MPx

Right had another delve about. The connectors were all connected although the nearside one by the step motor has obviously been separated recently and hadn't been put back properly onto its mount. Took the footwell panel off and the control module was there as expected. Put my meter onto the big red cable and there was 12.6v present so at least I know there is some power in the steps loom. Further investigation on the module is well above my pay grade but I didn't get any voltage reading on any wire in the "other" plug to the one the red wire was in so that may indicate its toast? Interesting to see that its a Ford branded unit.

The only other thing I could think of was maybe a broken earth somewhere? Looks like the steps loom earth is somewhere behind the bonnet release panel in the footwell (?) but I didn't fancy taking that off unless I really need to.

Since the steps were being a bit flakey before and needed regular lubing I'm very tempted to take the £310 option and just replace everything except the loom with new .... unless you guys have a better cunning plan. I'd hope that would be a simple "fitters" job of a few bolts where it wouldn't really matter that I don't know what I'm doing! Mike - MPx

Just a thought have you taken the motors off to see if they fire up and its the steps that are seized or check that the steps move manually? before you fit steps you have to fire them up to open them to fit the car.
