If you are going to add a second wireless router, make sure you set it up with a different subnet for dhcp, or turnoff dhcp and only allow specific IP addresses for specific devices. Things can get messy if you have two routers on the same subnet serving up the same range of IP addys. Security is important, so WPA2 at least, and for double strength control via MAC address too.

Some friends of mine had a similar problem with a "long" house and the wireless router being at one end on the ground floor. Using the Powerline concept they get good connections and speed from the upstairs rooms.

It does seem to help having the router/antenna up high, so upstairs may be better than downstairs.

I ran CAT5 cable all over my house (and around the outside of it) so that wireless is only an occasional activity (mostly smartphone). You might need to buy a couple of "switches" to allow for adding more than one wired device to a cable.

I still have a 16 port switch waiting to go in up in the loft!

Now if only I could get a decent mobile phone signal inside my house Big Cry .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

OK it took 5 minutes from out of the box to fully working in the previously dead zone of the house! Most impressed and the signal seems excellent.

Highly recommend (especially AT Amazon PRICE Very Happy )

good news...they are pretty plug n play, certainly not cheap but often easier than running new cable everywhere ! cheers

Only concern seems to be that the new access point is open and does not require password following set up as advised?

Only two problems are:

1. Now that the Netgear Powerline Extender is working in the dead-spot I cannot get the tablet to connect to the original Belkin Wireless Router when upstairs. It just says "obtaining IP address " and then fail to connect?

2. When it connects to the new wireless access point "NETGEAR" it does so on an open basis without the need to login. This is how it set itself up following the instructions but I was expecting a bit of security and a password?

Clear your Sunday morning heads IT Guys I would appreciate any help you can offer? Very Happy

For the Belkin router, trying deleting the connection and re-adding it. Paul

On the Tablet Android 2.1 os I did this - you click "Forget this connection" but scan immediately finds it and adds it again you click connect then obtaining IP Address and failure. Worked fine before I added the new Extender connection.

Other computers/laptops still connect with the Belkin Router as before...

generally when using mulitple wireless access points to cover an area there are some simple rules to follow:

1. set them ALL up on the SAME SSID (network name) so call them all "myhouse" (whatever) ...dont leave it just on Netgear by default ...make it same as Belkin ...then client devices "roam" between whichever is more powerful

2. set them ALL up with SAME encryption type and password; usually this is WPA or WPA these days, 8 characters minimum ...again, this is so you only set clients up once, and they roam between access points

3. set the access points up on different channels, if upstairs is on 1 then downstairs is on 6 ...or on some fancy ones, leave it to "auto" and it will take care of itself

so you should only have to set clients up once, and thats it ...dont have it seperate otherwise you are continually having to input details, re-authenticate and get IP address every time you move around the house....which is not how its supposed to work ..... cheers
