I’m overseas for a few weeks now but last weekend I decided to try adding 2 stroke to my fuel.

I bought 500ml of mineral 2 stroke oil from Wilco’s (£2.50) and then added it to the tank before filling it full at the local Shell garage.

Later that day I took Mrs Jim out, in what she refers to as “Your old banger” (she is not convinced by my decision to invest in a 14 year old car! lol) only for her to say that the engine sounded quieter since I had serviced it.

Now I could have imagined it but I too thought that the engine sounded smoother and it felt a little more responsive?

One thing I take a great interest in is engines !

and one thing I would NEVER EVER DO - is put 2 Stoke into a modern diesel engine - YOU are asking for problems ( and by the way "Under Warranty go and tell the main dealer you put 2 Stoke Oil in your Tank - Then watch him smile !

There are many arguments, mostly on motoring forums like its one about whether or not to add 2 stroke oil to diesel engines. Their main argument is that this will improve the lubricity of the fuel, particularly low sulphur fuels of around say: (50ppm/10ppm) diesel.

We all know Sulphur occurs naturally in oil. But It is undesirable for various reasons -
1) main reason is that the sulphur from the FFRR exhaust pipe forms sulphuric acid in the atmosphere which results in acid rain. In the vehicle it pollutes the engine oil reducing its life. Using a low sulphur diesel reduces both the environmental pollution and the pollution of engine oil. In order to produce low sulphur diesel, the sulphur has to be removed and the process that removes the sulphur reduces the lubricity of the diesel.
FACT: Diesel pumps and injectors rely on this to keep them lubricated.

So Should YOU add 2 Stroke Oil to your diesel to improve its lubricity?

In short, you shouldn't - NEVER in fact

2 Stroke Oil is designed for 2 stroke motorcycle engines, not 4 stroke vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers and ALL fuel refining companies all agree that running 2 Stroke Oil in fuel is likely to cause complications and there have been reports of engine failures due to 2 Stroke Oil sludging up valves and fouling injectors.

Seeing the picture above - You guys have fun with your 2 Stoke in your fuels !

All fuel refineries have produced lower sulphur diesel, so too have they added lubrication substitutes to the new diesels to the point that lubrication is now even higher than that of high sulphur diesel.

LR certainly don't recommend putting 2 Stroke Oil in your diesel engine ?
Funny thing also - fuel companies don't recommend putting 2 Stroke Oil in your diesel ?
Still cant understand why also The 2 Stroke Oil manufacturers don't recommend putting 2 Stroke Oil in your diesel - They know something you don't.

therefore it is a simple deduction that there is NO REASON to add 2 Stroke Oil to your diesel!




My only advice - IF YOU ARE BUYING A USED FFRR - WALK AWAY FROM ANYONE WHO HAS PUT 2 STOKE IN THEIR TANK. I hear them say .... Oh it sounds quieter ?
Well just go and get it serviced with quality fuels and oils

Waste of money in my opinion..

I have always used the VPower or Ultimate range which has additives included in the fuel. Never used supermarket fuel and never had any issues (including black smoke)

The overall difference works out £5-£8 more over a tank so not like its breaking the bank. Never compromise on the fuel, fuel filter, oil and oil filter aswell as the air filter. I always get genuine. Current:

I never tried two stoke oil, just additives that appeared to do nothing oh and of course gallons and gallons of fuel from my local Tesco - that also appeared to do nothing good or bad, in fact it still doesn't. I can afford to put any fuel in my RR but choose not to if I was bothered I would have bought a more economical diesel than a 5.0L Supercharged Petrol.

Tesco get their fuel from the same supplier as Esso, if I remember correctly. So its decent quality.
Not sure about other supermatket chains.
Diesel is all about cetanes. The more it has, the better it burns. That is determined by when it vapourises during fractional distillation. Branded fuels are better quality and have additives to clean and lube the fuel system. You pay your money and make your chioce.
If I used lower quality fuel, I would use an additive. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

they may collect the fuel from the same refinery but its on the tanker that the additives ,if any , are added..

Diesels are called oil burners for a reason, it’s distillate. Modern diesel is lower sulphur, because it’s cleaner.

I can’t see how adding 250mm of 2 stroke oil to 100lt of diesel would do anything too adverse. JLR are supposed to have motors that suit a range of conditions. ______________________________

MY 06 TD6 Jag with DPF gives me DPF warnings using asda fuel but not with Shell Ultimate.
Mileage on the both cars includes frequent long runs.

I run a company which uses numerous two stroke machines and I'm not so sure I'd mix two stroke oil with diesel. One of the most common problems we find with two strokes is a blocked exhaust through carbon build up and unburnt oil. This results in the engine not being able to 'breathe' in and out and as a result trying to exhaust through the carb. This particularly applies to mineral oil as well. Given the sensitive nature of DPF's etc. in modern cars I can't see it being a good thing. That said, I do put a dash of Castrol R two stroke in my four stroke lawnmower as the smell of burnt castor oil is great and makes cutting the grass a pleasure
