Hi team,

Bought a micrometer to measure my discs. It's got a 25mm capacity and been sat in a drawer for a few weeks. Today went to measure and found it won't fit over my discs.

Shoulda checked I guess!

Anyone know a fairly accurate way to measure without a micrometer?

Wanted to do it today so ordering a bigger micrometer will take a day or two...

Just to save somebody looking it up, the workshop manual says:

At 4 points around disc, measure disc thickness using a micrometer; renew disc if less than service limit or if variation is exceeded: Disc thickness, NEW 34 mm, Service limit 31 mm. Thickness variation maximum = 0.01 mm

This is for Brembo 6-pot fronts (2011 Workshop Manual). Cheers, Greg

Thanks Mike, terrible of Halfords to show that. It's the complete incorrect way to check a disc.

In the video, you may see method #2 where he uses two coins, then subtracts the coins. You need to measure past the lip which every disc will have unless it's brand new.

Also I should have checked the manual before I ordered a micrometer.

Try searching for brake disc calipers.

ebay or web brings up plenty.

They have a deep throat style. (don't try searching that with SWMBO looking over your shoulder)

Fairly inexpensive and will let you get closer to the hub. Micrometers for that job are expensive Cheers

Greg, I use Vernier calipers and two coins to check thickness. 2012 TDV8 Black Edition
2000 Disco. TD5
1975 series III

I use button magnets instead of coins where they stick, not neccessarily on car discs, helps without having to hold them. Only downside is that they don't give indications of thickness at the bottom of scores on a disc etc. That needs point tips on a suitable micrometer but if they are that bad, then you probably need to do something along the lines of further work. Cheers

Just started raining here but managed to get the wheel back on as it started.

Just did it using the coins method.... A bit of a balancing act.

Had digital vernier calipers for less than £10 in Lidl of late, plenty good enough for checking discs.

I’d leave the discs until next pad change 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back
