Just to save somebody looking it up, the workshop manual says:

Thanks Mike, terrible of Halfords to show that. It's the complete incorrect way to check a disc.

Try searching for brake disc calipers.

I use button magnets instead of coins where they stick, not neccessarily on car discs, helps without having to hold them. Only downside is that they don't give indications of thickness at the bottom of scores on a disc etc. That needs point tips on a suitable micrometer but if they are that bad, then you probably need to do something along the lines of further work. Cheers

You could check the rears instead Greg, assuming it’s not raining down there, like it is up here.

Thanks guys.
Thank you rjff An instructor-level mechanic taught me to use micrometer. But I didn't know you could get brake disc callipers, will have a look. Results: NS measures 33.2mm (was also taught to measure NS, prizes for guessing why) Needs pads but discs not too bad at 33% allowable wear. Regarding pad vs rotor wear - My discs and pads were both done around two years ago before I bought it. Based on the 33.2mm measurement today, I'd say I could get another set of pads use, then replace both next time. Making it a sort of 2 to 1 pad to disc wear ratio if that makes sense. Is this typical? What's the consensus guys, shall I leave the discs? . Had digital vernier calipers for less than £10 in Lidl of late, plenty good enough for checking discs. |

I’d leave the discs until next pad change 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back
