Buying advice 4.4 TDV8

Hi,

I found a 2012 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography in Holland that I thought I´d ask your collective advice on;

It was originally sold in Germany where it has had all services done by the local LR dealer, by the book.

The car was imported by a dealer to Holland in September 2016, at approx 43.000 miles.

The Dutch guy who bought it apparently changed his mind and the car is offered for sale again through the same dealer that imported it.

It is now at 51.300 miles and has been standing in a showroom for well over a year.

The DPF Filter was changed by a Dutch LR shop in 2017. Explanation being that the car had been driven a lot of short distances. No service has been done since February 2016 at 4.000 miles (LR in Germany).

Nothing except for the DPF filter has been changed outside of normal maintenance.

The car looks fantastic on photos and has literally every option available. The asking price is 39.000 euro which is about 5.000 euro too high in my opinion.

Given the history of the DPF, no service for 3 years (1.100 miles) and that its been standing still for over a year; would you buy it?

If so, what are things to look out for and what kind of questions would you be asking the dealer?

Very grateful for any pointers!

Thanks!

You are unlikely to find one with lower mileage.
I would say, given a new full service, including reports on the brake discs and pads (which are probably near the end of their life), it should be good for many more thousands of miles.

This link highlights common problems with 4.4tdv8’s.
Check the 4 short manifold hoses and also for any signs of oil leaks around the oil cooler.

Thanks for the reply Baltic Blue and for the link. There´s really an incredible amount of info here.

Do you know the approx cost of fixing pads and discs at an LR shop?

I need as much ammunition as possible for getting the price down if I decide to buy...

thanks!

Jonas

Its more like 10000 euros over priced, full brake overhaul £1500 plus it would need a very thorough service indeed.

Thanks Brian!

No concerns over the DPF filter changed so soon or any possible knock-on problems this could have caused?

My guess was that it would have been replaced under warranty.
The car may be prone to DPF filling up, but this all really depends on use.
One 20 minute motorway journey a week (or every two weeks) will keep the DPF in good condition.

What you really need to know is:
- Has the alternator been replaced (these can go 70-80k miles)
- Same for starter motor
- Same for oil cooler or oil cooler seals
- Has the turbo drain modification been done.
- Is this error code present: P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor A - circuit high

These can also be points of negotiation for you.
. Cheers, Greg

A set of new tyres will be on the shopping list after a year of showroom. 20 inch x 5 are well in the 1500€ rangenfitted if proper rubber is choosen.

Any vehicle stood up for long periods of time can create problems but if it's been in a warm showroom then it's probably not as bad. Things like the battery will be knackered if they haven't disconnected it or had a conditioner on it. The tyres may have developed flat spots too by being stood up so long depends on the showroom floor. Things like ceramic tiles are hard and you'll notice flat spots when you take the car for a drive.

Aside from that check everything electrical heated front seats fail, look for rust on rear arches and tailgate. Our AB doesn't have the turbo drain mod but doesn't smoke as it is driven properly everyday we do at least 50+miles in it with mixed driving so it's never been an issue along with the DPF and ours has double the mileage of this FFRR. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography

How much cheaper is it to a comparable car?

Way overpriced. No more than 30k with an extended warranty as the turbos need clean oil or they wear faster. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Thanks again for all input!

General asking price for this kind of milage, there aren't many, is around 35.000 euro for LHD cars. So this one is 5k too expensive to begin with.

Ideally, like Grofus wrote, I´d pay under 30.000 euro.

Its for sale by a private seller through the dealer so anything I can use to get the price down is great to have.

So far; service, brakes, tyres, all fluids, alternator, starter motor, which should easily amount to 5.000 euro.

If you can think of more things that usually fails around this milage or that possibly should have been changed already then please post!

Thanks!

I offered £13,000 under what a local dealer wanted for a TDV8 yesterday, they declined but i suspect they now realise the true value of the car they are trying to sell.

Old expression, if you don’t as you don’t get, so you never know.
Be prepared to walk away is the best advice!

£65k, it was a 2015 4.4 AB, non franchise dealer, low miles but 10 miles up the road of the franchise dealer has a similar car with the 2yr LR warranty for 55k.
