greenfly, aa, rac, other?

It's the time of year when I need to renew recovery cover. For decades I paid for AA and never called them. More recently I have used greenflag and on the one time I called them (Flat battery) they seemed ok, and the cost is cheaper. No experience of RAC or any of the much smaller outfits.

Just wondered if RR owners have a preference based on experience - eg worst case for full recovery probably need a tilt and slide which smaller operators may not have to hand.

Plus it's difficult to get an objective review online because of most of the so called independent comparisons are adverts in disguise...

Green flag not only use their own vans mechanics but use a company that serves the emergency vehicles and HGV`s so you could say that they are bigger than the AA or RAC for less money,
When I used them I had a 30min wait he plugged in a fault reader found dirty EGR. Then I bought an IID tool which I now keep in the car.
Just my experience.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.........been paying through the nose for AA cover for years and never called them out.

My renewal is due at the end of January, so i'll take their call and tell them that Green Flag are offering to halve my renewal fee, according to their TV ad.

Then we'll see how much the AA want to keep this customer!

Emergency Assist

Depends on how much cover you need, based upon experience / and forum reports, if an FFRR goes it needs recovering!

Have been happy with the above when needed (not the FFRR but another vehicle) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Green Flag will recover you from off road and will also transport your dogs if they are in the car with you.

The AA will do neither.........

My AA for full top cover is 22 a month and includes a £500 payment towards parts if needed up to six times which helps especially if your alternator or something goes Thumbs Up _____________________________________________________

I took breakdown cover with Aviva last year as I have Home, 3 Cars & travel insurance to make the most of their “loyalty” discounts.
The quote was more or less half the RAC quote for the exact same cover, when the documents arrived the cover is with RAC.
Not sure how that works but I’m happy.

Have used Green Flag, RAC and AA. All have been good to be honest. All I'd say is that they're all famously easy to haggle with on the phone, I can't think of another sector where you can knock quite as much off the original price in a minute or two. I'd say give the big 3 a ring and get them to name their best price

Green flag is 88.00 including europlus cover, but the car is still under warranty and it’s only a back up..

Guess the price might rise once it’s three years old.

Green flag cover vehicles up to 16 years old only which, for some, is probably a deal breaker. RR History

thanks for the many useful comments, paid £148.96 for Greenflag, Recovery Plus. It was an auto-renewal rate, I didnt get round to calling up to negotiate.

Cheaper than AA and hopefully wont need to call them out anyway. Surely by now my RR is fully debugged!

I took a call from the AA just before my renewal date. I told them I was not planning to renew because they put my price up.

The guy then offered me a 10% discount. I told him that was very nice, but nothing like the 50% Green Flag could offer.

He then offered me another 10%, so, for the sake of a phone call, I saved 20%.

When I asked why a 7 year customer (with no callouts, despite covering 3 FFRR's) had a price rise, then a 20% discount, he was at a loss to give me a coherent answer.

Maybe i'm still dreaming of a world where honesty was abundant? Big Cry

Be very careful with recover packages added to your car insurance - a lot of them are only for a limited mileage tow as low as 8 miles. Have a look at rescue my car they are very competitive. Also if you tow ensure they include your trailer / caravan 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23
