Bonnet release cable HOW TO!!!

Ok so as the title suggests, I though I'd pen a "how to" for anyone contemplating wether or not to attempt this simple fix...

By all accounts it's a common problem. The part required cost me just Ł12 from Dan and took me 45 minutes with the use of a large chisel, posidrive screwdriver and a medium sized hex drive.

First, remove floor trim panel by pulling straight up sharply, I used a large chisel wrapped in masking tape to help get purchase

Next, was to remove the trim surrounding the bonnet release lever at the RH side of the drivers footwell by pulling toward the rear of the vehicle

Now you should be able to see the break in the cable as in the image

Grab the broken cable with pliers or similar and pull to release the bonnet (if needed you may have to trim the sheath to get purchase on the cable)

Once under the bonnet you need to split the 2 halves of the cable by firstly locating the join above the drivers front wheel

The carrier is attached to the inner wing with 2 clips and comes away easily

Then simply open the carrier with a flat blade screwdriver to separate the 2 halves

Lastly pull the old cable through from the drivers footwell grabbing the rubber grommet which seals the hole in the fire wall and remove the 3 hex screws to detach the bracket from the car

Here you can see the difference between the old and new cable

Fitting the new cable is reverse of the previous steps, thread the new cable from the drivers footwell

Please note the need to seat both the end of the cable and the metal collar correctly within the carrier

Replace the carrier


At this stage grab a brew to reduce the risk of turning the air purple as you seat the rubber grommet back into the firewall then procedure to use washing up liquid and a thin screwdriver to your advantage.

Then attach the bracket and handle and replace the black trim next to the peddle box, noting the 2 locating clips as you push it back into place.

Finally pop the floor trim back down, noting that the clips slide up and down the rail so you may need to manipulate them before you push it into place. Clearly if you have my OCD you will hoover all the crumbs up first Embarassed

Nice write up Thumbs Up

I found it useful to attach a thin cord to the under bonnet end of the broken cable before pulling it through. It made threading the new cable back through the bulkhead simpler. John

May I add an important tip.

Put a bonnet ( hood ) prop AKA stick under the bonnet. I had wind blow my bonnet shut, Whilst I was threading the new cable in the footwell locking it, It locked the bonnet and took a bit of work to open it again.

Thanks for that. I'll keep that in mind as still to renew the cable due to delays supplying the part.

Thanks for this - took about 15 mins to do following this guide...and the cable was only 14GBP from local dealers!

As already suggested - part was ÂŁ14.99 from Land Rover (not local Sad). Still, beats waiting for the part to turn up off the net !

2 questions

What guides the cable back up to above the inner wing, does it run through a tube of some sorts?

Should this be a regular maintenance item, it seems that it is a common fault or was the design changed at anytime to prevent failure?

I just poked the cable & sheeth through the hole, as was already mentioned a little bit of swearing to the rubber grommet to fit through the hole. Then once it was situated properly I put my hand down to grab the cable and ran it along the same path as it was before. Mine looked like it was fed through a rather dodgy route so I made sure it went through the same route but was free of any foreign objects such as rigid brake pipes, brake booster vaccum hose etc.

I see your thinking in relation to a maintenance item, but even with the cable snapping where it does. It can still be opened with the pair of plyers pulling at the cables. i'd just replace it when it breaks tbh.

My L322 has done 186.000 miles on a 2003. so think that's long enough Smile

Just did this on my North American Spec (LHD) 2007 SC. One extra step required;

-You need to pry the cover off the foot rest. It comes up on the drivers side first. Once that’s removed, you’ll see a 10mm nut under it that needs to be removed. Then you can pull off the cover that surrounds the bonnet release lever.

Hi all thanks for this mine snapped and I replaced it all went ok but when I pull the handle it doesn’t snap back down like before it stays slightly up and I have to push it down - any ideas?
