my neighbour told me this morning that my offside dipped headlight was not working

turned the lights on again and after about 5 seconds it started to flicker and went out - then came back on and went out and stayed out

loose connector?

btw it was in auto sensing mode

all suggestions welcome

change bulbs over from near side to the dodgy light , if that bulb dont work it could be the ballast on the way out.. ... - .- -.

fortunately my jeep mechanic is on his way over to pick up my fathers car for a service so he's going to have a look

IF its the ballast - is it going to cost an arm and leg to replace/install?

my mechanic has just been - yes its the ballast

but he knows a source for a replacement at the right price

further checking by my mechanic this morning actually showed it to be a bulb 'on the way out' - not ballast as first thought

anyway, pair of OEM bulbs sorted at the 'right price' - all fitted

did you not change the bulbs over like i suggested nick, tut tut..... ...seriously , thats a good result..you should have gone for 6000k bulbs which give a whiter light with a blue ting rather than the OE yellowy bulbs.. ... - .- -.

i left it all in the hands of my mechanic - and yes he did the bulb swap which identified the problem!

i was perhaps presumptuous when i initially said it was the ballast?

i got the OEM bulbs because they were such a good price compared with what main stealers charge

even andrew page wanted £53 + VAT each for non OEM

also they were available to be collected/fitted this morning

what was very noticeable was side by side how much brighter a new bulb was compared with the existing one

i have read that hid bulbs do indeed loose their brightness after a while and they go pinky colour shortly before they fail...how much did you pay and where did you get the bulbs from nick... ... - .- -.

Interesting post Nick - On my way home this evening (after a very boring film at the flicks) I noticed my drivers side headlight flicker and then went out - Just left with side light. I turned them off and on again at some T LIghts and it came back on. It did it again just as I turned into my drive.

Is it more likely to be the bulb or the ballast - Will try the bulb swap but it seems to be intermittent right now.

May I ask Nick which bulbs you got and how much they were..? Do you have a good source for them.
Can I also assume that if its the ballast it's mega bucks? Ash

My drivers side light flickered then went off when I first bought my car a year back, it did it 4 or 5 times in a row, but then came back on and has been fine since. Could it be a loose connection somewhere? 2006 Mercedes CLS

But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C...

Is there a special process to remove the bulbs to swap them over. I read somewhere not to play with these as they can push out 25,000 volts or something.

My drivers side still flickers sometimes and goes put so want to first swap bulbs to see if it's bulb or ballast. Ash

no special way , just make sure they aren't switched on when you change them.

i make sure that the range has been standing for at least 20 minutes before doing any thing to the ranges electrics so that any ecu's etc have time to power down ...

btw,dont touch the filaments. ... - .- -.
