bit of a curiosity question

for those with a 'stop/start' button, when starting do you press the brake pedal first and then the start button, or vice versa ..

i've always done the pedal and then the start button and had a second or two delay in starting but the other day i tried the start button first and then pedal and found the FF started instantly...

[yes i'm bored Mr. Green ]

I always thought the delay was to allow the glow plugs time as the delay is longer when it’s cold.

I always press the brake then the start button but can't wait to get home to try the other way round.

I also thought the delay was very clever, to allow the glow plugs to get to temperature before trying to start. In the old days with some cars you turned the key part way until the glow plug light went out then you could start the engine.

i figured glow plug warm up as well ..

pressing the start button first maybe does this and by the time you press the pedal , the plugs are ready to go...

Another vote for pedal first and had assumed a glow plug delay. Mine definitely takes longer before it starts when it’s cold.

For a complete answer - I put my seatbelt on whilst waiting for it to start and the gear selector rising.

Pedal first for me, when cold turns over stops, I believe to move oil around and glow plugs warm up then starts no problem.[/quote]

Stan,

Could you perhaps test (as best as humanly possible) simultaneous 'pushing' and report results Whistle

Thanks

Have done both and sometimes realise I am pressing the button as my foot heads to the pedal!

Definitely takes longer if it is cold but never thought about the glow plugs warming on the press of the starter button - very possibly true - good spot 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

The handbook says pedal first so that the way for me.

Anything else will only end in tears Stan!

I assume its stated that way for the glow plug reason.

Incidentally I know from not think correctly one day that a simultaneous press of both button and pedal also results in an immediate start. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

i cant see that starting the 'alternative' way would harm anything as pressing the start would heat the glowplugs and the pedal would start the FF...
maybe because the way specified in the owners manual , the delay when you press pedal then start, does the same glowplug 'heat up' process...

Having been advised by a dealer that it is better to allow the system to boot up before starting the car (as also done on motorcycles nowadays) I press the start button and then when prompted to do so put foot on brake and press starter again. I used to put foot on brake and press starter, that generally worked but in my 405 I occasionally got error messages like "gearbox fault" which are obviously not attractive. Software updated and no longer get such messages, but still follow the 'boot up first' approach. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Footbrake then button for me. I can't imagine it makes any difference as the car systems decide what happens next. The glow plugs are heated when needed on a start but don't come on once warm. The car knows what's going on and gets on with it. I think! Happy to let it continue doing it's thing tbh.
