turbo solenoid with variable geometry alarm

Hello everyone

I need your opinion informed I'm not too competent in mechanics.... Not even at all
On my 4.4 TDV8, driving on the highway at 130, I had the alert message 'Performance restricted' 'and in the process I lost all power.
At the bag the mechanic was able to read anomalies concerning:
- The particle filter
- The turbo solenoid with variable geometry.
He started me the procedure concerning the regeneration of the filter which after a while was displayed as successful.
Before going further my mechanic strongly advised me to do a descaling
We therefore made a descaling 1:30 in each air intake. At the exit, obviously all was well he had smoked black and I had recovered power. I did about 100 km on the sport position by riding a little bit of speed ... I tend to respect a little too much the limitations and the engine is at 1100 laps to 90 1300 to 110 and 1600/1800 to 130) .
Then again '' restricted performance ''.
This morning at startup the anomaly disappeared from the dashboard alone.
This afternoon… New restricted performances ....
Before committing myself to disassembling the turbos ... I would like your opinion.

Before you do anything your mechanic tells you, get yourself a code reader, ideally Gap IIDTool (an investment), get the actual errors and post them up here.
. Cheers, Greg

Oh and Bluewater9118 check your rubber inlet hoses. These feed into the 'donut' top of the engine intake. The hoses can crack and is often the cause of sudden restricted performance. They can crack underneath the clamps so you are best to remove and check. If they are fine, then this can be eliminated.
. Cheers, Greg

I trust my mechanic, he will do all that is nescessaire before entering in big expenses.
This does not prevent to keep informed otherwise and to confront the opinions.

I see him this afternoon, I'll take a picture of the camera screen copy on the forum

Michel

Ok - good you trust him.

As mentioned we need the error code numbers.

The 4.4 is very good, reliable however there are common issues. Please see here:

I mentioned the intake hoses, this may help, sounds similar:

It could possibly be The CSOV.
The change over valve for the turbo air supply. The early versions in the 2011 models were prone to sticking, and is a fairly easy repair. As Greg has said, you need the Fault codes.

The valve can be seen if you look down directly behind the radiator, middle right side when looking towards the engine. The different pivot for the vacuum chamber of the later version is quite easily identified.

By removing the plastic under engine tray it is much easier to access the valve to squirt a bit of penetrating oil and or, as I do before the winter months , apply a squirt of lithium grease to prevent corrosion by winter road salt.

Also note the modified valve does not have a nut on the top of the shaft.

J can now give you the errors codes:

P0401 - Recyclage des gaz d'echappement. Débit insuffisant detecté
P1247 - Pression de duralimentation du turbo compresseur basse
P0046 - Solenoide de contrôle de suralimentation du turbocompresseur/compresseur - Plage/perfomances du circuit

You know now all the reasons of my worry.

Michel

Google translated it:

P0401 - Exhaust gas recirculation. Insufficient flow detected
P1247 - Low turbocharger turbocharging pressure
P0046 - Turbocharger / Compressor Supercharging Control Solenoid - Range / Performance of the Circuit

. Cheers, Greg

P 1247 seems to cover the CSOV stuck problem.
My guess would be clear that either by cleaning, oiling and seeing the actuator move, and the other Fault codes will then clear.

I was definitely told by the MD technician that it was a fairly common fault, caused by both the very small amount of travel and the build up of dirt/ corrosion from road salt.

Having said that , out of nearly 50 different owners providing data for my Fault Log, mine was the only one reported.
