Strange electrical problem.

I’ve done a search but can’t find anything similar which is strangely worrying!

Last week I parked up, shut down got out of the car, mrs went to open the boot and said it didn’t work - I’m like ‘are you sure you pushing the right bit’ went to have a look and sure enough boot wouldn’t operate.

Got back in the car and everything was dead, no electrics at all. So I’m thinking dead battery... however I faffed around under the bonnet for a couple of minutes, went back to drivers seat and everything had come back up!

Locked up went to see the Falkirk Wheel, came back - started first time, and has since most of the time.

In the past couple of days though it’s happened again several times.

It is like when I switch off the ignition the battery disconnects, the car loses power but seems to reset/reboot itself.

When I does this I can hear a ‘slightly mechanical’ sound that is not there on a normal shutdown.

After it goes dead I normally need to do something to wake it up, sometimes simply reinserting the key does the trick. Sometimes you stick they key in but the lock doesn’t activate, so opening to door or waiting a few minutes allows the reboot cycle to happen.

Once’s it rebooted, starts fine and strong but radio presets and trip counters reset. But starts fine.

Strange one, can’t find any reference to it so I am hoping that someone’s had similar and can point me at what the fix might be.

Or appreciating I’ve some more diagnostics to do if anyone has some starting suggestions!

Sounds like you've got an iffy battery connection or your battery is failing.

I'd disconnect the battery terminals and clean them up but before you reconnect it also clean the main body earth terminal.

I'd also suggest getting your battery tested.

Are talking about the one from the neg terminal to the frame or the one down by the starter?
