4.4 TDV8 Won’t start

Hi
Well this is becoming tedious

3months into my relationship with the RR, today it decides it won’t start

All lights come on
12.1v at battery
Slight click can be heard when starter button pressed
Nothing other than low battery warning
So sat waiting for RAC so we can head home to North Yorkshire - we’re currently sat in Lewisham in London at our son’s place

Battery was recently changed when the top plenum was changed

Any thoughts? Alternator maybe? Any clever electronics to check?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards
Mark

Mines also still under warranty so it’ll be back in the dealers tomorrow!

Sorry to hear about the troubles, but at least mine waited a little longer before throwing its toys out of the pram.

Might be obvious, but check the battery terminals and the voltage seems on the low side, should be up above 12.6. If the RAC man gets it running, check the voltage again after a few minutes and it should show about 14.5 or more to indicate charging. If it doesn't, then perhaps the alternator is on the way out or has failed. Mine started and got me about 15 miles then died at home. At home it had below 12.5 volts at tickover and then dropped after a few minutes to the point that the engine stuttered and stopped. If that's the case with yours then it may require recovery to home or your repairing garage. The battery will not get you the distance home.

If it starts and runs with a charging voltage, don't stop it until you get home Confused

If the starter has failed, it may be a recovery. Cheers
Richard

You have all the same thoughts I’ve been having.....it’s a new battery so I expected 12.7v but can only see 12.1v. Something is amiss. I’ll see what the RAC guy says first.....

I was warned about the green oval.......

Fun aren't they Razz

Love em or loathe them, you can't live without them. Now where have we heard that before.

Good luck or a small bill and let us know the outcome. Cheers

I was about to say, 12.1 volts is basically flat. It will probably drop to around 11.5 volts as soon as you hit the start button.

On my 2012 WM the 'system powered up, battery OK but click when starter pressed' was cured by fitting new starter motor. Apparently it's a common failure. Only Range Rovers since 1988

12.1v is around the 50% fully charged level but I agree, it should be 12.7v as it’s a new battery

Mine used to rest at 11.4V and never had a problem starting the car. It wouldn't run the FBH though... 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I had the same problem and it was the starter motor which went at 40k on the clock. I replaced it myself and took the old one apart to find that the solenoid contacts had gone black which prevented the full battery voltage getting to the motor. When cold it meant that there wasn't enough oomph to turn the engine over. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Managed to get home albeit very late (or early!!) at 3am this morning

RAC diagnosed a faulty diode in the alternator and a sticking starter motor. Battery and shutdown voltage draw checked and all fine on that front. Battery fine.

So...back to the dealer to get the repairs under way.

Thanks to everyone who came up with some really good suggestions. Much appreciated as always

Best regards
Mark
