Suspension issue?

Hello everybody just bought a used early 2014 L405 Autobiography with 45.000 miles and have some issues with the ride

1) car drives like a boat and gives a horrible feeling but it still kind of goes ok on turns

2) 2-3 days after I got it I get some vibration on the wheel especiallt noticable on 60 m/h and more. Basically the whole car vibrates. Already replaced and aligned the tyres. Took it to the dealer and suggested its normal. Drove a brand new and drives way better than mine. Any idea as to what might be wrong before I take it again to the dealer again?

Vibration doesn't sound right at all.

The TDV6 doesn't have adaptive dynamics so will be more 'floaty'

In terms of comparing to new, Land Rover did a lot of fine tuning from a refinement perspective over the model years. I realistically don't think you can compare, the later cars are much better.

How do I know there is Adaptive Dynamics? I read that the Autobiography models had it as standard!?

It was not fitted to TDV6 models in any derivative.

Whilst the TDV6-engined L405s don't have what LR called Adaptive Dynamics on the L405, all L405 have CVDs. On the L322, CVDs were called Adaptive Dynamics. CVDs go soft / wear like normal dampers with usage but because they are fitted with a computer-controlled valve, the electronics makes them firm for cornering, a feature not available on normal dampers. Hence the vehicle staying relatively flat on corners is no indication that the dampers are worn. Switching off DSC makes the dampers firmer and therefore is a good way to check if the ride improves.

Out of balance wheels can upset CVD operation on my L322, presumably because the vibrations are treated as bumps.

The IIDtool can re-calibrate L322 CVDs so may be able to do so for the L405 but finding just the right road conditions to get the calibration right can be tricky and there is no ability to reset to factory. It took me several attempts to arrive at a good calibration for my L322's CVDs which had gone soft after about 50K kms of rural roads which now have good control and ride comfort again. Eventually the CVDs will need to be replaced and the calibration re-done.

After 6 months two new front struts and front bush changed I am stillhaving the same issue. New struts have slightly improved the ride. Any idea if the height control sensors could be involved in this? Thanks

1. The only thing I can think of with this is that the suspension control has gone to a default/failsafe setting - my Merc SL55 has a slow suspension leak and eventually the car sets the suspension to a default mode which gives a very soft and wallowy ride - maybe the L405 has a similar setting? Probably needs a fault finding trip to your local indie or main dealer.

2. My L322 had severe front end vibration at about 60-65mph. Turned out to be worn suspension bushes, but it took two attempts until the right ones were replaced. After the first attempt, the vibration was still there, so may be worth looking at the other bushes.

Have you tried switching DSC off to see how much of a difference it makes?

If you have an IIDtool then check if there is a later software version for your dynamic suspension module, otherwise check with a LR dealer or LR specialist workshop.

Perhaps one of the accelerometers is faulty in that it isn't registering movement of the body.

If a height sensor was faulty then the ride height would be affected.

Tried switching off DSC but no difference. Not sure where and how I can check the accelerator? Is there such a part? Am now thinking of changing the height sensors just to make sure but I wad also wondering is there a chance the CVD (electronic damper control) module be faulty/slow? Thanks for the help btw cause in Cyprus am on my own in this.

The accelerometers are part of the CVD system and more for ACE if fitted. My L322 with CVD has 3 and L405s with both CVDs and ACE have 5, so likely that your vehicle has 3 unless your vehicle also has ACE. About the only checking that can be done without a diagnostic tool is to ensure that their mounting screws aren't loose. A specialist diagnostic tool might be able to interrogate the accelerometers to determine if they're reporting appropriately. If all 5 are fitted then 2 in the front, 1 each side and 1 in the boot, but if no ACE then the side ones are unlikely to be fitted.

You replaced the front struts but not the rear shocks? Worn-out rear shocks produce a worse ride than worn-out front shocks as the rear-end sways whereas the front will only have poor steering.

Is there any chance that your tyres are scrubbing when cornering? A known condition on the MY14 is the centre diff not disengaging properly which is fixed with a double flush of the transfer case oil then the transfer case motor recalibrated.

I can see no reason to change the height sensors but if done then the suspension system should be recalibrated.

Hey Graeme thanks a lot for the support here. I did change the front struts to Arnott when I thought that was the issue and they cost half the price but didn't think it was necessary to change the rear (Arnott dont supply rear struts for L405 yet) In any case my tyres are brand new and I have 20'' wheels car has 50K miles on it. I am now considering the accelerator calibration/replacement cause it sounds like it could be an issue. Bear in mind though that the car car corners ok from what I can understand (dont know if was better when New)

BTW any idea if the rear suspension should be 1inch lower than the front? Because mine is like that!

Since the ride is supposed to be adaptive couls the air compressor be slow or the CVD slow to respond to the changes. Biggest issue is on Motorways especially big bumps where looking at the 4x4 screen inside the car does not record them on screen at least (although I know the screen is too slow anyway)

Thanks
