Wiring an Inverter

Hey Guys
i have an inverter that i'd like to fit in the boot to run an Xbox from time to time.....sadly the rear socket won't give the required amps so i was wondering about using the rear fuse wiring as i seem to recal a post on using this for a twin battery set up.....would this work? and since i find electrics all voodo and witchcraft can anyone give me a bit of an idiots guide?......please....
thanks Carl

p.s i know search is my friend but since i can remember where i read about this hours of searching have about turned me grey....

Hi Carl,

If you look behind the right hand panel in the boot you will see a chunky red cable, this feeds the rear fuse board. You can use this for your +, and then find an appropriate place to earth to. If you pull out the liner for the right hand storage bin (lift out) you will have loads of space.

A word of warning though, if the amp draw is that heavy then your battery will go flat in no time at all. Perhaps look at installing a second battery? It needn't be a great one, I will sling one in there next time I see a cheap battery come up locally on fleabay.

I'd do a check on reviews of the optima batteries. As I understand it they are only any advantage in a Landrover in so much as you can park upside down and not worry about acid leakage. Otherwise any good leisure battery will perform the same. I haven't had a personal experience but have seen the views of other Landrover 101 owners after using several of these when they were recommended on the 101 circuit and quite a few jumped onboard. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Optima are great, they last ages, but are very expensive. I took the view that I would rather replace my battery more frequently rather than pay out the extra. As I usually only keep a car for 2 or 3 years it's normally not an issue.

So, has anyone fitted an Optima as the main battery?. If so which one and what is the performance like?. Is it as claimed on the website?.

Is the chunky red cable fused? If not make sure place an inline fuse in the inverter cable very close to where tap into the red cable to avoid a burnt out Range Rover.

if the inverter fuse is in the inverter case rather in the cable, theres a risk the cable could chafe on something causing an unprotected short.

Cheers

The feed to the rear fuse box comes from the battery, via the front fuse box where it passes through a 100Amp fuse.

The Accessory socket (front and rear) both get their feeds from the rear fuse board and are fused to 20A each. You could safely draw 50A off the cable without risking overloading it, or popping the 100A fuse.

If you need anything more than 60Amps I would suggest that you run a seperate cable. I would still suggest the second battery option. If your old battery will fit in the 2nd battery space the it would make sense to use that as it obviously still works.

Worth noting that at 150Watts the maximum amp draw on that would only be 12.5A, the larger 300W inverters will only draw 25A so the wiring there will easily cope with that.

The biggest inverter I can fins is 1000W, but at 83A the alternator wont be able to keep up with demand and you risk damage.

Dan, is the ampage of the cable the total realistic loading without letting out the magic smoke or the spare loading assuming every other possible item running off the rear fuse box is switched on and doing its stuff Question 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

The total allowable ampage on the circuit going by the fuse installed is 100amps - generally the cable will be rated higher than the fuse?

Being that the cable/fuse has to allow for 40amps of accessory power on two sockets I think its safe to use that as a guide, plus everything else that runs on that circuit.

I wouldn't recommend drawing 40 amps in the two accessory sockets and then running a high power inverter. Common sense should always prevail.
