Sounds very much like mine when first bought @89K it turned out to be the FEAD belt tensioner, all nice and quiet after replacement.

Thanks for that - do you mind me asking the replacement cost? I was beginning to suspect something other than the alternator as the noise is barely there at idle. |

I think it was about £80 but it was done at the same time as a few other bits, so a bit difficult to separate the accurate cost. David

Thanks again, do you know if it's this one by any chance - I can't find a part called the FEAD belt tensioner? Just trying to figure out where to look.

Could be the belt tensioner as said or possibly a bearing on something at the front of the engine, water pump/alternator etc.

I do not have the part number I am afraid, but as said above it could be almost anything in there, my specialist needed to dismantle before they were sure so can be difficult to pinpoint. David

Not sure what Landrover would call,it, we called it FEAD, it is also known as the Serpentine Belt or Multi Vee belt......it’s the accessory drive belt, sometimes there are even two! David

That's great, thanks for that. I'm taking it in tomorrow but hopefully that will help narrow it down. |

Just got back from the mechanic. It sounds like it's coming from the power steering pump but he said difficult to know for sure if its the power steering pump or something else in that area until its taken apart. He also spotted the power steering fluid was on the MIN mark so topped that up but it didn't make a difference to the noise. |

whining on the PAS pump usually occurs with steering load rather than revs, but its something on the drive belt. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks that makes sense, it doesn’t vary while steering although there is a little ‘chirping’ on full lock.

Thanks for all the help folks. It was one of the Idler Pulleys. Took the mechanic about an hour to take out the air box, fan and belt then diagnosed it to the pulley. Fortunately local dealer had one in stock. |
