What did the RAC diagnose? There must be more info i.e. engine fault codes or noises? |

When you say airbox, what are you describing the airfilter? if so my guess is turbo failed, oil ingested, engine wrecked. - Sorry. BMW i3 Electric Car

Sadly wrecked engine and turbo although if the plenum was dry of oil I dont quite see where it could have been getting the oil to run on so I may be wrong.

The large bang happens when the revs are too high and something lets go (usually a con rod) which punches a hole in the block. If it seizes up the revs gradually fall to an abrupt stop. I tried to help a lady with a Mondeo that was running away (you block the air intake if possible), just as we got the bonnet open a lump of engine flew past my head and smashed the rear window of my Audi.

I had not heard about “engine run a way’ before. I certainly expected more than 4 years and 60k miles for a £115k car!

Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM and producing up to 10 times the engine's rated output until destroyed by mechanical failure or bearing seizure through lack of lubrication.
