L322 Hitachi Suspension Compressor Running

Hi All,

Would appreciate some advice please. I have today stripped down the compressor and done a seal and filter replacement with a X8R kit, as I had the message Suspension Fault, Normal Height Only.

All seems well on refitting but on starting the car, the compressor is running constantly with only a momentary stop and blow off then runs again constantly.

My question is is this normal behaviour?

Compressor will run for a few seconds to top up the lines, raise the height or fill the reservoir. Then it should turn off and stay off. Running constantly would suggest you have an issue. Check the airlines are pushed all the way in to the collets. You may need to strip it back down, retrace your steps and double check everything is fitted/seated correctly.

Also, I assume that by seal you mean you've replaced the piston ring?

Was there any sign of wear/damage to the old one?

Was your compressor running normally before you did the repair or was it behaving the same as it is now?

Appreciate the timely replies guys thank you.

Did replace the piston ring, the previous one was in good condition although obviously looser in cylinder.

Didn't appear to be any leaks from lines, collets. that said I found the 1 black tube that goes to the 2 side round items - could they be accumulators or similar?- completely detached, strange as the pipe fitted into the collet nicely after installation.

The car holds its level after shutting down, that makes me think the air tank holds pressure, or am I not correct with that thought ?

The old one of course cut out after 5 minutes running, due to the dashboard message and status light extinguishing as I mentioned in original post.

Any further thoughts please all?

The valves hold the car at height. If the reservoir is not getting up to pressure, you should see problems moving from normal height to off road, back to normal to access height and then back to normal. Do this with the engine running. Also a diagnostic tool will be able to show you the reservoir pressure should be above 180 psi. .

leak in reservoir wouldn't cause a loss in height due to one way valve in block.

Does it rise and fall normally when you manually change heights?

Have you checked the main output connector in the boot?

A little soapy water on the connections would rule out any leaks.

You could also test the compressor manually to check airflow. Red wire positive, black wire negative. Stick your thumb over the airline. You shouldn't be able to stop the air. If you can there's a problem.

After doing the repair did you change the relay which is mandatory when changing the compressor?

I changed my Hitachi compressor with a Dunlop same thing just rebadged I think? which came with a new relay

Most other places charge £30+ for the relay?
