How theft proof is yours

Hi folks,Does anyone have any advice on increasing the security of the L322 with regard to nicking the vehicle rather than breaking in?
Is the electronic key a sufficiently difficult enough barrier to prevent a drive off, or do you employ additional methods and visible deterrents such as chains/ padlocks, steering wheel bar locks, wheel clamps etc, especially for prolonged park ups?
Seems the scallys have managed to defeat keyless systems already.

My beloved is a 2008 model so I’m assuming it’s electronic key is ould hat technically speaking, that’s my Rangie not the wife incidentally! Rolling with laughter 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

I used to be indecisive and have a split personality... but we are ok now...I think?

I use a tracker hidden in the car [https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Realtime-GPS-GPRS-GSM-Tracker-Spy-Tracking-Device-For-Car-Van-Vehicle-Motorcycle/162932131964?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649]

I might not be able to stop it getting stolen, but at least I can look up where it's been and where it is. Current:

Pre ~2013 cars don't have keyless entry to my knowledge, so none of the L322s.

Even with keyless entry you need to be within range (about a metre), but this can be extended using specialist signal repeater kit, and this is easily carried as its no bigger than an ipad.

Good practice is to keep any spare keys locked in a metal safe, a good distance from the cars.
The keys used daily should be kept in a metal tin if possible, a decent distance from the front door, or which ever direction the car is.

I think the keys on our pre 2013 cars can be cloned, and this can happen when you are locking / unlocking in a car park / petrol garage. Not much you can do about that esxcept being aware of who is around.

Trackers are great, but ideally they need to have a reserve battery, else they are too easily defeated. Ideally get one that informs you if the vehicle is moved. The one on my car reports movement if the magic fob is not in range of the car, so when I drive it it doesn't report anything. Obviously you must ensure you don't put the car key on this fob, or it will not track the car if someone steals the keys.
They also don't give much of a visible deterrent. If you slap a load of stickers on the car it just tells the thief they need to go looking for it.

My mate who lives in central London uses a steering wheel lock, the one that covers the whole wheel. That is a major visible deterrent, but his house cctv shows people still try the door handles.

I dont know if there are any other decent ways to secure it. If they want it bad enough, they will get it somehow. Too many toys, not enough time

As far as I understand, keys can be cloned using the OBD port. There are various methods you can use to protect the OBD. Keyless start cars are vulnerable to this. They still have to get and I'm glad I don't have keyless entry - hoping they'll go for a 405 or a Velar with keyless entry, an easier target. They can still get in using a signal 'catcher' mind, but they have to lie in wait for you to blip. . Most Range Rovers here in London use steering wheel locks as a John says due to the spate of thefts using signal repeaters.
. Cheers, Greg

Yeah of course divulging anything useful would be counter productive come to think of it. 🤔
Sometimes good old tech like a top quality chain and padlock are hard to beat AND ARE a visual deterrent.
I've got a soft sheathed case hardened motorcycle chain with a high end padlock, so unless the undesirables happen to carry a spare steering wheel and brake pedal to replace the ones they'll have to cut off! I use a disc Lok for short park ups. 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

Disk lok, that's what my mate uses. Thumbs Up

A heavy chain may work, but they would probably cut the steering wheel. Rolling Eyes

I recall someone telling me there is a device that disables the gearbox control, so it is stuck in park. If I can find it gain I will post info.

I know there is a way to disable park for recovering the car with a flat battery, but it still can't be driven. Too many toys, not enough time

So many covert ways you can disable a car.

Back in the 70's my dad used to take the HT lead off the distributor/coil if we parked in the city. Old school but you can use that thinking to add hidden kill switches e.g. transmission control like John says.
. Cheers, Greg

Always double lock it. Also have a 6 series with keyless, bought a faraday pouch which works a treat.

Not relevant to a RR but I used to remove the distributor arm in my Dad's 1965 Landrover!

A thief would have to be very well prepared to nick it after that! 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Disklok that covers the whole steering wheel. Parked face in on the driveway with mrsblonde's car blocking it in. Ring video doorbell alerts us if anyone ventures onto the driveway

and a large dog in the kitchen to let out who barks the house down every time the doorbell detects motion outside Thumbs Up

Go back to basics and have an immobiliser fitted... Quite inexpensive! These days you can have a dongle on your keyring that you simply drop in the cupholder to allow the immobiliser to work Thumbs Up

If they can't start yours, I'm sure they won't hang around long!
