Rear View Camera Replacement Advice

Hi Everybody! I have a L322, 2007 Vogue HSE.
I tried to sort my rear view camera today, alas, as usual, no good came of it! So here a few pics of what I have and a brief description.
I do have power coming to the unit via the red/yellow and brown cable through the top of the rear window/door. I presume the silver-end connector is the lead that connects back to the tv.
As you can see, the connections FROM the camera are red/black and the gold tv connector.

Both the red/black and the tv cable fed into the camera through ONE black cable and this actually went straight into the back of the camera lens itself.

There wasn't any other wires in the camera box as you can see from the photo. ( just a load of black solid silicon )
I would like to fit another camera- ANY camera that works would be fine but the ones on ebay etc that I have seen come with audio phono type jacks so I am at a bit of a loss as to what kind to buy so that I can virtually 'plug in and play' with it. I dont mind a bit of drilling and fixing, but need to know about the connections really.
Thank you for your time. 'Knowledge Is Power'

Wiki

Yes, thank you Stan, I have ( But didnt know that it existed until you asked about it !) but the two posts dont really explain the wiring question. I think that I will pop into Halfords today and see what they say about connecting a new camera up to the existing cables. I dont really know what each of the cables do.... that would help I suppose! :-/

considering that the camera fitted is an aftermarket ebay jobbie

to save yourself too much trouble and assuming the camera is the issue and not the connections to the vehicle electrics

I'd buy another ebay camera , cut the camera off with a few inches of cable free , inside is two wires one black and one red .

pull some cable from the fitted camera chop and solder , black to black red to red , fixed without too much chew.

did exactly the same to mine and its worked well ever since Thumbs Up

Thank you Dingg. So I buy a new cheap camera from eBay and then I just reconnect the current gold-ended cable from the old camera cable to the in-place silver connection, and then snip, strip back and join the new camera cable to the old red/black cable that is already in place and reconnect that to the white connector?
Is that ok?
Cheers

I presume that as this camera (linked above ) has a red/black cable, this should be connected to my black/red connector AND being as a video lead also comes with the camera, I presume that that goes straight into the old silver tv connector?

no

to save feeding all the cable through all I would do is pull any slack from your in place camera lens , snip that wire , inside there is two wires one red one black , take your new ebay camera snip that lens with a tail of 4 or 5 inches , rejoin corresponding red and black wires , heatshrink or tape up and push back into upper rear tail gate , all this saves you removing the upper tailgate and hassle of getting the plugs through the access holes

as long as your issue is the camera lens itself it works , if the issue is in the associated cabling (doubtful IME) you'll have to dismantle reduce thickness of connector plugs and feed through access hole etc , its a bit more time consuming to do.

I've went through a couple of the ebay jobs when water ingress ruins the picture I just do as I suggested , takes much less time

buy that ^^

cut off the camera with a 5" tail

pull through cable on your existing camera , cut back

connect black to black and red to red

job done

leave your connections as they are , the power neg and pos in the white connectors and the brass to metal connection hooked up together

hth

Camera Job

Well Dingg, I must admit that your electrical know-how worked just fine, Thank you! Smile
Once I cut and re-connected the cables, (they were VERY thin, but they were correctly coloured) I had a a picture on my screen! Yeahhhh!!
However, as usual with me, I couldn't follow instructions and went a little off-piste. I was too impatient and couldn't wait for Dingg's suggested camera to arrive.... but to cut a long story short, I ordered a different camera and it didn't fit nicely into the camera casing.... consequently, I had to mackle-it! .......and then when installed it didn't focus on the ground, but on my bedroom window!..... and after another go at redirecting it.. .. it doesn't work !
So, moral of this story. ''Do as you are told by someone of superior knowledge''!!!
But at least I know it WAS a fault on the original camera and I need a new one, again......
Thank you Dingg and everyone else Smile 'Knowledge Is Power'
