As the title says, does zero mean that's it, your out of fuel.
Or do you get say a further 30 miles / 3 4 5 litres of fuel ?

I got my 4.4 tdv8 down to 2 miles range left, and wonder how close I was to running out

Lol , be very interested to here how far you get before you run out. I had a CLS320 and it said 5 kilometres left to empty when i got to the office, 7 hours later it wouldn't start and I had to get a can of diesel to get her going again. Lowest on the FFRR is 8 kilometres before i wouldn't risk it anymore. 2015 4.4 AB

I ran about 30 miles on ‘zero’ a few years ago - on a bank Holliday across the Pennines - got a whole load of ear ache but eventually made it to a fuel station that was open

Not sure I’d want to do it on a regular basis though......

I was expecting maybe 10 miles tops.

I'm not sure how easy these things are to re-prime, and whether it will suck all the crap in the tank up.

As for brimming the tank, the tank is meant to be 97 litres and I've put in over 95 litres without being close to empty.
I assume I'm filling up the inlet pipe too.

There shouldn’t be much crap in the tank tbh, the days of rusty fuel tanks are long gone.

I’ve had mine click onto O on the way from my house to the garage, which is about 4 miles. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I used to have to routinely dip the fuel tanks for the standby generators at the radio stations I maintained.
It involved chalking the dipstick with special chalk that changed colour from white to blue when it came into contact with water.
You won’t go far on the top layer of fuel if it is water, and the gauge float can’t tell the difference
Hence I never run mine so low.

My previous RR, petrol, only managed about 5 miles towing on the motorway before it started to splutter, managed to get off at a junction but it stopped dead on the roundabout at the end of the slip road.

Was having a conversation here at work about my exploits and I then mentioned the water in fuel discussion.

The guy pointed out that actually unlike petrol, water can be held in suspension in diesel. Its a common problem as the diesel doesn't create vapour like petrol does, so condensation is a bigger issue.
I just googled it as I thought he was having a laugh.
I'm not convinced its applicable to cars as much as big diesel tanks, but the fact diesel cars have water separators does mean it must be common.

Again referring to big static diesel generators rather than cars, but it used to be a real problem at remote sites where generators were housed in unheated garage/ outbuildings . During winter months we had to regularly clean the water traps in the fuel lines to prevent them freezing up, which if left could block the fuel supply.
