United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Baltic Blue

Sorry to hijack this thread, but just a final thought whilst on the topic of water in diesel
I think it is much less of a problem than it was back in my Land Rover days, simply because garages sell much more than they used to do and therefore their tanks are re-filled with fresh supplies rather than in standing in tanks for months on end.

My previous RR, petrol, only managed about 5 miles towing on the motorway before it started to splutter, managed to get off at a junction but it stopped dead on the roundabout at the end of the slip road.

So about 4 gallons left when it reads zero then? Laughing Laughing

I managed from the Lecht to Inverurie in my S3 on 0 miles left. That's about 45 miles. 3AM on a bank holiday Sunday/Monday - passing about 4 petrol stations, all closed! It spluttered into the Esso much to my relief! There was a lot of coasting and not a lot of right foot!

But yes, I'd say as a rule of thumb, you've got about a gallon. Zero miles is probably zero miles which the car at the worst angle for fuel pickup so it won't splutter round corners etc...

Still slightly off topic, my understanding is that some biofuels are hydroscopic, potentially also a source of water in fuel tanks. They can also rot rubber components in older vehicles, causing problems for classic car owners, leaving aside the environmental/food supply policy questions. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Our 3.6 tdv8 spluttered to a halt on a very slow, very adverse camber traffic island with a range of 80 or so miles showing & around an 1/8 on the guage.
I no longer trust it & top up if less than 100 miles showing. Paul,

Mine wasn’t on purpose - same as madpugger - bank holiday and everywhere was closed, so just kept going until I found one open - I was twitching big time -didn’t think I’d make it and kept waiting for the splutter.

I had an Audi S8 that went another 35 miles after showing 0 miles, having said that, I also had an S6 that ran out in very busy traffic on the M25 with about 1/3 tank showing. You have to be somewhat forceful to splutter to the hard shoulder and the traffic cops weren't too impressed. Nothing they could do when they checked the dash and it indicated plenty of fuel.

I don't intentionally play fuel light bingo any more and Mrs Bob is never impressed when it happens.

I did around 30 miles in my old Octavia RS with the range reading 0.

Had a 2011 Merc e class petrol as a loan car once. The fuel light came on and about 20 miles later it stopped dead and the Mrs had to come and meet me with a gallon of fuel! Interestingly, that car was a top spec AMG and it didn't have a fuel computer....

My VW Jetta did 45 miles on zero and didn’t even splutter , I reckon there is at least a gallon but then I remember an old Mondeo I borrowed and the fuel mileage went 3, 2 , 1 - stop !
You got to play petrol station roulette when you are on the road every day just to spice things up a bit.

Mine runs out with 22 miles range left so I am twitchy once my fuel light comes on!

I wouldn't trust my RR at anything less than 1/4 full

Back in the old army days tanks were keep full when not in use for a while their reason being that condensation would build up and end up at the bottom of the tank resulting in wrong gauge readings and water in fuel breakdowns
Looks like that's about right always fill mine up from 1/4 tank just don't look at the cost you'll use it anyway Whistle

I filled mine up when i first got it and it was no more than £120 Shocked , and then i thought the gauge must have a fault as it was disappearing really quickly which was the point i realised just how good my VW was on fuel. 55 mpg V 17 mpg is quite noticeable.

I got stuck on the A303 on my daily commute because of a Lorry fire. It was showing 20 miles to empty and I had 12 miles to home. I was on the hands free to my wife saying I might have to pull over and you meet me with a fuel can. Ever since that day I now keep it at full.

Steve.
