I've had random alarm activity once a day since I bought the car home.

Yesterday I was working in my office at home when I started hearing a beeping. I assumed it was a truck reversing somewhere. It did not go away, so after a couple of minutes I wandered through to see if I could locate the noise. The RR was beeping away merrily. Just now, next day, it did the same.

We are nowhere near a main road, there is no passing traffic, no pedestrians etc etc.

Any ideas?

Take a look at the bonnet switch.

Ours was doing this when a neighbour said it’s strange how it only does it when it’s in the sun, turned out that when the bonnet got hot enough it must expand just enough that the contact made. We just unplugged it for a few weeks, when the alarm didn’t go off we stuck a piece of rubber on the bonnet and plugged it back in and it’s been fine ever since.

Agreed. Mine did it every time the sun came out.

I just disconnected it. The alarm hasn't sounded since.

Ah. That could well be it. I did think to myself that it seemed to be about the same time of day - so maybe it is when the sun comes over the house and onto the front of the car!

I'll keep an ear out tomorrow and see - and then have a look at the switch. To be honest, the chances of car theft of that vehicle in New Zealand are almost nil, so putting off yobs from breaking the windows to steal from it is probably more of a useful thing than worrying about the vehicle being hot-wired, which is why I assume there is a bonnet switch in the first place.

Yup ours had just rubbed on the paintwork of the bonnet by the smallest amount, then when the bonnet heated up it must have just lifted that extra bit and the alarm was triggered. We touched up the tiny tub mark, put some 2mm rubber over top to ensure it has a decent amount of pressure on it and it’s been great in the 2 years since.

Likewise the paint is rubbed on mine.

Today it went off circa 0915 just like yesterday! I popped the bonnet and fettled the switch and it's contacts. I will see what happens tomorrow and if that hasn't cured it, I will do your fix with the rubber.

Went off at 0925 today, so I think it must be a sun issue.

I will try sticking something to the switch if unplugging it shows that to be the fault.

If I pull the plug block out, will the system then complain incessantly that the switch is not connected, or just remain silent and ignore the switch?

Doesn't complain on mine, I believe the default is an open circuit, but when the button lifts it closes the circuit and send the signal, so when disconnected, car believes bonnet is closed. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Yeah it’s normally open so car believes all is well

You can test them easily with a multimeter, really simple and very unlikely to fail - it’s just the gap being slightly too large so it’s making the contact.

The car was in the shop the other day (faulty rear washer) and I had them disconnect the bonnet switch whilst they were at it.

The car has remained entirely silent ever since!

Can anyone identify the correct part number? I have found at least two!

YUE 000162 seems a likely candidate. However I need to order it from a UK supplier for shipment to a friend there at the moment who is coming back to NZ so I want to be sure as I won't easily be able to change it.

I currently have the bonnet switch unplugged - it causes no problems and of course has the added benefit of the alarm not going of when the sun shines. On my previous RR I did stick a thin rubber foot on the underside of the bonnet which also solved the alarm problem, I would do that again but I can't find a suitable bit of rubber - or foot  Geoff
