L322 4.4 v8 m62 master

Does anyone know of someone who really knows the m62 engine inside out because I have a running problem with mine!
When driving along the car is fine but when you come to a hill and put your foot down a bit more there is little response and the box has to change down. There seems to be very little power or torque between idle and 3000 rpm. I have replaced the maf (Bosch) both cam and crank sensors (Delphi) plugs and coil packs (nkg). I did the timing chain and guides 1 and a half years ago. Changed the throttle body and pedal for known good ones. There are no codes the fuel trims are all within 5% and it flew through a cat test. The symptoms can’t be made to happen when static only when driving. I have recorded live data when it happens and have watched it back in slow and cant see anything wrong. This started about 4 weeks ago.
Someone please help as it’s driving me mad!!!

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

Have you checked the performance of the fuel pumps, high pressure and low pressure, also changed the fuel filter recently?

Do you have LPG? .

Yes it has Lpg and is the same on both. When you get above 3000rpm it doesn’t pull to bad (but not like it use to). I will check the fuel pressure just to be sure. I believe the the fuel pressure reg is built into the in tank pump sender unit. I changed the fuel filter about 4 months ago.

Brakes binding, you never know?
Do you have no diagnostic codes from the engine using land rover specific kit ?
Did it run ok after the timing chain and guides as if the timing is off the engine will be fighting itself.
The vanos system varies the inlet timing and when failing can cause a lack of low down power but that is normally accompanied by start up rattle and warm idle knocking.
Another commonly overlooked problem is blocked Cats.

Nope brakes are fine and I did the chains and guides 1.5 years ago using a Land Rover timing kit this started about 4 weeks ago. There is sometimes a rattle on start up and when warm but it’s not that bad ( I have driven others that sound worse than mine). I lossend the down pipes so it could blow and went for a (very loud lol) drive and just drove the same so don’t think it’s the cats blocked. I went out for a drive yesterday evening out into the sticks and I think it’s to do with the gearbox not either a. Lockup clutch not unlocking b. solenoid sticking c. mechanical fault. It’s late changing down gear when going up hill but you have to put loads of throttle on then it will suddenly change but by then your at 80% throttle so it’s then off like hell. The more I think about it the more I think it’s the box not the engine at fault. I had the box rebuilt 2 years ago but in the end they weren’t very good they put ATF in not Mobil lt71441 (I changed it when I found out about a year later) but the company went bust Big Cry

The other half has just been out in the car and said it came up with trans failsafe so I told here to turn it of and back on again to get home. I have scanned it and the code is p0881 tcm power input signal could this be wiring or a duff solenoid?

There would have been an amount of the original ATF in it still unless you had it power flushed as some remains in the torque converter, as far as the transmission code, RRPhil is your man.

I emptied the sump and put a new filter in then filled up the sump took the return from the cooler off and got my dad to start and put in reverse and drive whilst I pumped more in till it was just gold coloured fluid coming out of the return then reconnected the return and topped it up. Can anyone get RRPhil to look at this post please as I’m not sure how to get in touch with him ta.

Well that's one way i suppose, as far as the code, i don't know I'm afraid, the only wiring i have had faults with is the connection going to the transfer box but i can't remember if there is a separate connection for the transmission or whether it all passes through that multi plug.
I can't find that code in Rave in connection with the ZF5HP24 but you could have a search for it and maybe add RRPhil to the search as he operates over a number of sites.
