Hi All

My first question, as my Newbie intro states, and hopefully I’ve put it in the right category. Below is a list of advisories on the last MOT (please ignore the tyre comments, the last owner had kerbed three of the wheels, I don’t think any concerning damage has been done to the rubber) the oil leak is absolutely minimal, the handbrake however is a joke! It points to the roof lining when fully applied, and just about holds her on tick over in D
just wanted an idea of the likely costs I can expect, to repair the other items, MOT is in January, I’m guessing at about £500-600 at the garage, I can’t do a lot of things myself any more, knackered knees and all that stuff

• Nearside Front tyre cuts on sidewall not down to cords soon
• Nearside Front Brake pipe slightly corroded ends soon (3.6.B.2c)
• Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm rubber mounting deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement inner bush cracking up (2.4.G.2)
• Nearside Front Suspension arm rubber mounting deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement back arm bush starting to split (2.4.G.2)
• Offside Front tyre small cuts on sidewall not down to cords soon
• Offside Rear tyre small cuts on sidewalls not down to cords soon

• handbrake high

Looks like both front and rear suspension bushes will all need doing soon

Possibly new handbrake cable, new brake shoes and new rear discs and back plates

If one of your brake pipes is corroded, recommend removing all the inner wheelarch on the RHS and the covers front to back, quite likely all is rusty and needs replacing

Hopefully you have £2K set aside for all this....( a year)  .

unless you have service / repair history that says otherwise, seriously check out your brake pipes, especially the long run front to back .

Drivers airbag obviously defective (5.4.1)
Offside Front Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)
Nearside Rear brake caliper securing device missing clip missing (3.5.1j)
Nearside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded on top of wishbone arm (3.6.B.2c)
Offside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded top of wishbone arm (3.6.B.2c)
Offside Front Brake pipe excessively corroded up under cover (3.6.B.2c) 2003 Vogue 4.4 petrol, silver 126k on clock when I got her

Your offside exhaust leak will be a crack in the front edge of the cat where the manifold comes down from the engine and enters the catalyst. Well known fault but can be welded for c. £50

Handbrakes can be adjusted by most mechs at a garage (c. £50 but there is a wiki here) but If it has run out of adjustment play then things get difficult and expensive

can you give me more detail please, why is it more difficult if the cable has run out of slck 2003 Vogue 4.4 petrol, silver 126k on clock when I got her

NOt an expert in this but know from others they have had probs getting bits off etc. due to age and corrosion.

Oil leak is probably the valve cover gaskets - common problem, replacement seals are about £30 but get them replaced by an independent specialist - could also be the PCV valve causing pressure and forcing oil under the seal.
