I don’t think it’s a typo. ZF Lifeguard Fluid 5 is the fluid that ZF recommend for the 5HP24

With any ATF, if the transmission’s solenoid adaptions can accommodate the particular friction modifiers in the fluid (particularly for the torque converter lock-up clutch) and achieve the designated shift times, then all may well be fine.

In your case, if it’s the company that rebuilt your transmission who are using this fluid, and they warranty their work, then I guess you needn’t worry.

However, in general, I’m always entertained by the non-legal terms used by these inventory-reduction fluid suppliers to justify the use of their “multi functional” fluid in a particular transmission. This company use “is suitable for”, but “recommended for” and “meets the requirements of” are other well-worn phrases. If you see a fluid that claims to be suitable for Dexron applications and ZF 5, 6 or 8-speed applications at the same time then my recommendation would be to avoid it. I’ve seen what Dexron fluid does to the 5-speed ZF transmissions and it’s frictional characteristics do not meet ZF’s specification.

I emphasize that this is all just my personal opinion. If you are interested in TE-ML 11 then you can read it here : https://aftermarket.zf.com/remotemedia/lol...-11-en.pdf

Might be time for a flush and refill. My only concern would be the transmission rebuilder's response if an issue arises with the trans.

They also put a sticker on the car showing a service requirement in, I think (I'll check tomorrow, er, today - it's midnight and I'm in bed) 40,000km. Ron B. VK2OTC

Yep, I can see your dilemma. I'd be tempted to leave it, if you feel it's likely they would honour any future issues.

Just to add, even if ZF had approved the fluid as meeting their 11B specification, it doesn’t make it 'suitable for use' in the ZF 5, 6 or 8-speed units. For example, Castrol Transmax Z meets the specification and is for use in commercial vehicle applications, AGIP Dexron III meets the specification and, well, it’s Dexron! The only fluids specified for the 5HP24 are the ones shown in the photo above.

New Zealand 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black

I am taking delivery of my 4.2 SC on Monday.

Whilst it is still with the selling dealer, I asked them to check whether the ATF was changed at the 10 year (it is still 45,000 miles off the 100,000 point so the years come first) mark (it's an 06 vehicle) and they could not find anything confirming or denying that.

They then changed it anyway, "just to be on the safe side", as part of the pre-delivery work. I presume they used the JLR specified fluid.

I'd agree that, even if doing it yourself, saving pennies on fluid cost to risk pounds on transmission failure amounts to spoiling the ship for a hapeth of tar....
