I think most of us are aware how sensitive the 6HP26 is to changes in the friction properties of the fluid because Land Rover warn their technicians never to reset the adaptions at the same time as changing the fluid. This is because performing the two operations simultaneously can result in catastrophic clutch slip as the ECU cannot learn the new pressure settings in time to prevent the clutches from burning themselves out.

With you RRPhil, but prices do seem steep.

I ordered some a few weeks ago and have it in the garage. It looked like all the photos I've seen of the Lifeguard bottle. Needless to say I'll be more than a little miffed if it's not genuine.

As previously discussed (http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35529.html), I think that the situation with the ‘German’ fluids from Ravenol, Meyle, Febi, Mannol, etc. is even less clear. These fluids may come straight from Pentosin who may, or may not, manufacture the Lifeguard Fluid 6 for ZF, and could therefore be the identical product. When the price differential is high it’s easy to understand why people are tempted. But do you really want to risk it? Phil |

No, I decided I didn't want to risk it. I believed I was buying genuine ZF fluid and when it arrived it looked exactly like a ZF bottle... I'm going to check again though 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Is there any evidence that the oil in the bottle of LR oil is sourced from ZF? From what I've seen, LR documentation refers to the Shell spec and doesn't refer to ZF's Lifeguard 6 anywhere.

Clearly ZF don’t manufacture transmission fluids. They get an oil company to make it for them and put it into ZF-branded bottles. For example, the 5-speed fluid was originally made by Exxon-Mobil (semi-synthetic) but it would appear that the equivalent ZF-branded product (fully-synthetic) comes from Pentosin in Germany. We also had the whole debacle with Shell having to manufacture M-1375.4 in the USA for Ford, who badged it as Mercon SP and sold it at a fraction of the price of the European fluid, simply because it was perceived that Ford owners in the US would not be prepared to pay the prices that we’re expected to pay for the fluid. I guess all we can say is that, if the vehicle manufacturer specifies it, it will have the right friction modifier pack in it, no matter where they sourced it from. There’s no way they could afford to take any risks with this as the consequences might be extremely expensive. Phil |

You've got me worried now, Phil.
Note they say Lifeguard 5 - it could be a typo. Their PDS the SYN-TS™ is suitable for use in ZF 6 Speed ZF6HP26 Transmissions - it doesn't mention the 5-speed but it does mention Esso LT 71141.
