I think most of us are aware how sensitive the 6HP26 is to changes in the friction properties of the fluid because Land Rover warn their technicians never to reset the adaptions at the same time as changing the fluid. This is because performing the two operations simultaneously can result in catastrophic clutch slip as the ECU cannot learn the new pressure settings in time to prevent the clutches from burning themselves out.

The friction modifiers used in the fluid are therefore critical to the operation of the clutch packs and torque converter lock-up clutch and, not surprisingly therefore, these are a trade secret. It may be possible to reverse engineer the fluid to establish what the exact characteristics are but, as end users, we have no possible way of knowing if a pattern fluid has an identical friction modifier pack to ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6/Shell ATF M-1375.4.

In my personal opinion, it’s just not worth saving £40 on 5 litres of fluid to put your £2000 transmission at risk – just spend the extra and know that it’s right. I know others will disagree - it just depends upon your attitude to the risk.

Phil

With you RRPhil, but prices do seem steep.

The pattern oil I showed is £53 for 10 litres

whilst the best I could find (on eBay ) for 10 litres of ZF Lifeguard 6 £169!

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet at some point!

Be great if there was a way to test...and one must wonder what garages and auto trans specialists are putting into people's cars.... .

I'd want check what exactly they are supplying for the different prices at lrparts
The only option that is easily understood is the LR genuine fluid at £21 / litre.
The other 2 use a Photo of a ZF lifeguard 6 container to illustrate a land rover part number that definitely isn't on the container.

Remember you "only" need 7 litres for an oil change in the 6 speed, not 10 - it does bring the cost down, especially at £20/litre !
PS I bought the genuine ZF fluid via our forum sponsor Advanced Factors. Paul,

I ordered some a few weeks ago and have it in the garage. It looked like all the photos I've seen of the Lifeguard bottle. Needless to say I'll be more than a little miffed if it's not genuine.

I'll take some photos tomorrow and post here. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

As previously discussed (http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35529.html), I think that the situation with the ‘German’ fluids from Ravenol, Meyle, Febi, Mannol, etc. is even less clear. These fluids may come straight from Pentosin who may, or may not, manufacture the Lifeguard Fluid 6 for ZF, and could therefore be the identical product. When the price differential is high it’s easy to understand why people are tempted. But do you really want to risk it?

No, I decided I didn't want to risk it. I believed I was buying genuine ZF fluid and when it arrived it looked exactly like a ZF bottle... I'm going to check again though Shocked 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Is there any evidence that the oil in the bottle of LR oil is sourced from ZF? From what I've seen, LR documentation refers to the Shell spec and doesn't refer to ZF's Lifeguard 6 anywhere.

My question would be whether some brand other than Shell fully meets Shell's specs.

Clearly ZF don’t manufacture transmission fluids. They get an oil company to make it for them and put it into ZF-branded bottles.

For example, the 5-speed fluid was originally made by Exxon-Mobil (semi-synthetic) but it would appear that the equivalent ZF-branded product (fully-synthetic) comes from Pentosin in Germany. We also had the whole debacle with Shell having to manufacture M-1375.4 in the USA for Ford, who badged it as Mercon SP and sold it at a fraction of the price of the European fluid, simply because it was perceived that Ford owners in the US would not be prepared to pay the prices that we’re expected to pay for the fluid.

I guess all we can say is that, if the vehicle manufacturer specifies it, it will have the right friction modifier pack in it, no matter where they sourced it from. There’s no way they could afford to take any risks with this as the consequences might be extremely expensive.

You've got me worried now, Phil.

My 5-speed was serviced a couple of months ago by the company that did the transmission rebuild a couple of years back and refilled with this Gulf-Western product http://www.gulfwestern.com.au/product/syn-ts/

From an email reply when I queried Gulf Western:

Quote:
Syn-TS, a full synthetic transmission fluid which meets the ZF TE-ML 11B specification. This specification is the ZF Lifeguardfluid 5 specification and what is required for your transmission. The Esso LT 71141 is no longer available, it is now called Mobil ATF LT 71141. Both our Syn-TS and the Mobil ATF LT 71141 meet this ZF TE-ML 11B specification.

Note they say Lifeguard 5 - it could be a typo. Their PDS the SYN-TS™ is suitable for use in ZF 6 Speed ZF6HP26 Transmissions - it doesn't mention the 5-speed but it does mention Esso LT 71141. Ron B. VK2OTC
