Power steering stiff

Hi all
Have an 03 l322
After completing a six hour drive mostly motorway the steering remains stiff at low speed,
This resets on restarting but once I hit 50mph it stiffens again i can drive under 50 and it's fine but as soon as the speed is increased it stiffens and won't ease until I restart the car.
Have checked the fluid and it's clean and filled to the correct level.
Could this fault be typical of the servotronic valve failing or could it be the bcu?

I have similar symptoms on our 2006 TDV8. From what I've found, it could either the bcu or the servotronic valve. Now the weather is getting slightly warmer I'm going to test the signal at the servotronic valve & see whether I can work out which is the problem.
Bcu replacement looks much more expensive than the servotronic valve. Paul,

Heavy Steering at slow speed / Steering Servotronic Valve

I couldn't find a way of testing the electronic signals between the BCU & Servotronic valve on the steering rack, so bit the bullet & decided to fit a replacement servotronic unit to our TDV8 with heavy steering.

Changing it over wasn't quite as easy as expected from previous write-ups by others as I initially had a problem trying to get the replacement gauze filter to stay in place in the rack while I inserted the servotronic valve "nose" - due to the flow of power steering fluid coming out.
I had tried to seal the top of the PSF reservoir to reduce fluid loss, but by the time I'd got the replacement filter & valve in place, I'd lost nearly 0.5 litre of fluid into the drain can I'd fortunately put underneath.

However, the changeover wasn't a difficult task, but might be a challenge if you've got big hands as it's quite tight around it !
The car was jacked up with the wheel hanging & the wheel removed. After removing the electrical plug & removing the 2 torx screws (make sure you have the correct size torx bit & have the bit firmly held in-line with the screw !), a few light taps on the side of the old servotronic valve loosened it & then it could be gently rocked out.
I placed a thumb (!) over the hole in the rack while picking up the new valve & filter, then let go while trying to use a finger to just push the filter in. That didn't work as it just fell straight out due to the fluid flow!
I then found something the same diameter as the filter that I could use to push it deeper into the bore with (others have used a bolt, I found a rivnut of the right diameter).
If I'd had something ready initially, I think I wouldn't have lost anywhere near as much fluid.

That worked well, or maybe I'd lost so much fluid the flow was no longer a problem, anyway, the filter stayed in place, the fluid flow reduced significantly & I could then fit the valve without any issue. I roughly lined up the valve tabs where the retaining screws fit, then fitted the screws finger tight & rotated the valve slightly so that screws were lined up well.
There's a specified tightening sequence to follow to make sure the valve doesn't get pulled out of line, but the torque is so low (3Nm) you can't fit or use a torque wrench, that the best thing to do is very progressively tighten each screw a little in turn using a small torx key or 1/4inch drive ratchet by hand.

I topped up the lost PS fluid, started up & SUCCESS - nice finger light steering while stationary !

It probably tool an hour max including the messing around finding something to push the filter in with.

that little filter is defo problematic...i left the old one in and the job was much easier.. ... - .- -.

Hi all,
Not sure if this the right section to post and its my first time here on forum.
I have L322 on M62 BMW Engine. Last week while driving on the new road with those loose pebbles, I realised I am loosing my power steering fluid as the pump was making noise. I bought the ATF (Power steering fluid) from Halford's and filled it up, but then I keep loosing it while driving from the left hand side from the rubber sleeves, though not sure as I can only see it dripping from there but not the right side. What could be the cause and what it could be? I would appreciate any help and guidance. Many thanks to all of you in advance.

it cost in labour and how long? is there anything one has to look into while changing the steering rack etc etc?

Just been advised by one of the specialist's to try Lucas Stop Leak, which might solve the issue and sorts the leak out. just wondering if someone else has done the same before? Is it safe to try and wont affect any other parts?

I've just looked at the process to change the rack and it doesn't look short - RAVE (downloadable from the wiki - workshop service manual) says you have to remove the sub frame. I was eyeing it up thining you might be able to twist the rack out without doing so. I'd say 4hrs+, I think that you can look up how long a job takes somewhere in RAVE nut I don't know

Not sure about the sealant - it depends upon what is wrong with it - I have an obvious hole in one of my pipes rather than a faulty seal so i need to replace the pipe.

If I was faced with replacing a rack or tying out some sealant; I'd try the sealant, but things I'd check first with a google are if anyone has had first hand experience of it cause either the servotronic valve, or PAS pump to cease up or block/gunk up a pipe after using the stuff.
Worst case you'll be replacing the rack and the pas pump if it messes with the system.
