United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black
98 RON

Hello folks,
So the workshop manual (2007-2010) for my UK 2007 SC has the following to say (in the section about the knock sensors):

The ECM is programmed to use ignition maps for 98 research octane number (RON) premium specification fuel. It will also function on 91 RON regular specification fuel and learn new adaptions. If the only fuel available is of poor quality, or the customer switches to a lower grade of fuel after using a high grade for a period of time, the engine may suffer slight pre-ignition for a short period. This amount of pre-ignition will not damage the engine. This situation will be evident while the ECM learns and then modifies its internal mapping to compensate for the variation in fuel quality. This feature is called adaption. The ECM has the capability of adapting its fuel and ignition control outputs in response to several sensor inputs.

From this I read it is set up to run on 98 RON but *can* run down to 91. Now I normally run normal unleaded (95RON) and it's fine, but from the above I read that if I put in 98 it can actually take advantage of it (i.e. advance the timing accordingly).

So, on my next fill-up, I'll use 98 but does anyone actually run 98 and noticed any difference between normal unleaded and 'super' unleaded in an SC?

Cheers,
Stu.

I can't answer your question but will comment on RON.

In Oz, normal unleaded (ULP) is 91RON, 95 is premium unleaded (PULP). I don't think 98 has an acronym.

Most garages have 95, some (mainly Mobil) have 98 but it's rare to see a servo have both. Mobil doesn't sell 95.

The state govt. has mandated that all larger servos sell E10 which is 94 RON. I don't use it, I use 95 in our cars (Subaru Forester turbo and L322) and my bike. Ron B. VK2OTC
