Gutless TD6

Hi All i have an issue with my 2002 TD6 starts but if you put your foot down at all it just ignores you, will slowly accelerate but god help you if you hit a hill!

checked the in tank fuel pump and can hear that running when you turn on the ignition (shuts off after about 30 seconds presumably got up to pressure) changed the fuel filter just in case but still wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
I think this is a fueling issue (though not sure) no faults on the dash.
anyone else encountered this type of problem? does any one know an easy test on the high pressure rail as i'm starting to suspect the high pressure pump or is there something i'm missing that i should check first?

In my experience, much more likely to be leaking intercooler pipes or, perhaps, a leaking intercooler.

If it’s consistently gutless, i’d remove the under tray and have a crawl underneath. Pipe from intercooler to inlet manifold may have popped off (or potentially the one from the turbo to the intercooler). If either has, refitting may well solve your problem. Mine did a few times and in the end I replaced with silicon hoses, which solved it. The intercoooler is below the radiator.

If the intercooler is leaking, your more likely to have intermittent performance - sometimes it will be fine, other times gutless. If it’s leaking there will be a fine mist of oil over the front if the car behind the grill - particularly the electric fan.

You could stil be right, but sorting out intercooler hoses would be the cheapest and easiest option. I’d start there.

Ultimately, you might have a turbo problem instead. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Its running to well to be injectors i feel, whatever it is its effecting all the injectors at once hence my thoughts on high pressure pump, but there seems to be no way to test the pressure?

If you have an IID tool you can check the pressures of both the High Pressure and Low Pressure pumps. May be worthwhile seeing if anyone local to you has an IID and get the VIN code for your vehicle to check.

I believe IID tool is capable of reporting live rail pressures. Other diag tools may too.

However, in the event of low pressure, this could still be caused by either the pump or leaky injectors. A diag tool will be able to report leak back values, although this can also be done visually.

Don’t discount lack of high pressure air at the intake. It can definitely cause gutless performance. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Are you sure its not just normal as they are a bit gutless anyway!

On a serious note, a GAP IID tool can check the fuel pump pressure and also the injector values.

Common problems would be the low pressure fuel pump or a split / loose intercooler pipe.

My top hose came off the EGR once and it was absolutely gutless.

Is it making any strange noises or blowing any smoke on acceleration.?

Batpooh, I am having a similar issue at the moment but thankfully its intermittent and if I drive carefully there seems to be no issue. I have checked Low and high fuel pressures, turbo actuator and boost, vac and turbo hoses, live injector values and all look good. Tested continuity of loom all good. The car feels as though it's running out of fuel under prolonged heavy load. It is then gutless like yours but after a period of sitting ticking over becomes good again. I am going to change the in tank and external low-pressure fuel pumps as they are very cheap. Under order, they should be here soon and I will report back once fitted.
I would like to get hold of a cheap injector loom but not to easy here in Australia, if anyone has one for sale please let me know.
If you have an old laptop the cheapest way to get decent diagnostics is with a cheap ebay IPNA cable and software. I can confirm you can get all the engine data for the TD6 if you select BMW E53 M57 ( the 1st of 2 variants on this engine listed ) 2007 TDV8 VSE

I bought an injecotor loom form Land rover Oz for about $90 last year, the UK was nearly $300.!

I picked up a new loom for A$150 inc tax and shipping from an Australian supplier, they had to make a special order. My issue was solved by changing both electric fuel pumps but I wanted to swap the loom as a precaution as I am planning a very long outback trip in Sept. Changing the pumps has transformed the performance and the fuel consumption seems to have improved too. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Check the small vacuum pipes for leaks, especially from the valve attached to the drivers side, engine compartment,inner wing.
We had the small pipe fracture to the turbo and it had the same issues.

Hi Peoples Very Happy just a quick update on the gutless issue.
due to work commitments and going on holiday Thumbs Up i haven't had a lot of time to tinker with this but have had a good look at it yesterday and today ...and have managed to improve the situation significantly although i'm unsure what i did Confused i had a spare injector loom so i thought as it was there and any easy swap i would do that first...no difference so i unplugged every thing i could see in the engine bay to check for possible corrosion etc no obvious issues so plugged it all back in and hea presto running a thousand times better??? but still suffering with a hesitation above 4000 revs which if i persist with my foot down suddenly dissapears when the gearbox catches up (presumably because the revs drop when the box goes up a notch) perfectly driveable as long as i dont want to give it full beans. so back under the bonnet to fanny around with all the wiring again in the hope that i was onto something, but alas neigh luck still hesitating in full wellie mode.

unsure what else to try now as the problem is changing but still open to anymore suggestions
