The diagnostic skills of your garage, or their ambition to extract max money from you, is questionable.

+1 with kezbo, it looks like you are being prepared for the "haircut".

Wise words Nino. My first thoughts on the noise was loose sparks plugs letting by, but ruled it out as they did check the bores with a scope.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I can assure you that I'm not letting it go just yet, but always need to scope all possible options! It has certainly proved to be a more of a project then I was hoping it would be and I could have done without this for another 12 months, however now it's just a matter of sourcing the right replacement engine.

I had a P38 4.6 that sounded like that, it had blown a piece of the head gasket out.

Hi David, have you thought about doing the chains and guides whilst the engine is out, just a thought. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie |

I did think about changing the timing chains and guides, but as part of he pre-fitting inspection the garage found that the guides looked almost new with virtually no wear, so we decided to leave them alone. Unlike the old engine which looks awful in comparison (and not just the timing chains and guides )
