The diagnostic skills of your garage, or their ambition to extract max money from you, is questionable.

But if repair is financially unviable for you, don't just scrap it. Try selling it as a project first. That way you get the same money for it but the vehicle could live on if someone with the ability to repair it bought it!

+1 with kezbo, it looks like you are being prepared for the "haircut".
to me, first thing to do would be to check spark and fuel delivery. engine is running short of three or more cylinders and most noise comes from that. and statement "crankshaft has overheated and is now out of true" would make me run fast from that establishment.

wish you luck, Thumbs Up

Nino.

Wise words Nino. My first thoughts on the noise was loose sparks plugs letting by, but ruled it out as they did check the bores with a scope.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I can assure you that I'm not letting it go just yet, but always need to scope all possible options! It has certainly proved to be a more of a project then I was hoping it would be and I could have done without this for another 12 months, however now it's just a matter of sourcing the right replacement engine.

As for what happened, the car suddenly lost power (no EML) and at the same time I saw white vapour pouring out of the exhausts. When I had a look under the bonnet there was no coolant left in the engine and the expansion tank stank of petrol. The garge found that the lower coolant pipes have all cracked probably indicating overheating of some sort on the lower part of the engine. It had been losing a bit of coolant recently, but a pressure test in January uncovered nothing obvious, but I guess the head gaskets when the engine was hot could be the most likely cause.

The garage have no financial interest in me replacing the engine as I'm supplying it, so I'm happy that they are giving good advice. In fact they would make a lot more from it by investigating and trying to repair it. Hopefully I should have an engine ready for Monday and maybe even back up and running by the end of the week, providing the FFRR gods agree! Laughing David

I had a P38 4.6 that sounded like that, it had blown a piece of the head gasket out.
Strangely enough that was on LPG too. The vaporiser failed and pressurised the coolant causing the water pump to fail and then it all went downhill from there.
Cost me nearly £2k to sort out and vowed I would never have an LPG converted car ever again.

Hi Knares

I managed to source a replacement engine for a reasonable price and the garage are in the middle of changing them over. Fingers crossed we'll be up and running by the end of the week.

I'm also taking the opportunity to fit a new radiator, water pump, gearbox intercooler and the 88deg Behr thermostat. There maybe a couple of other big items that we need to replace (such as air con condenser), but all the small stuff such as hoses, gaskets and plugs will also renewed.

The old engine didn't look in the best of health and there was a significant amount of water in the oil when they drained it. I'll take a closer look tomorrow when I go over as it's now on the workshop floor.

Will update progress later this week. Very Happy David

I did think about changing the timing chains and guides, but as part of he pre-fitting inspection the garage found that the guides looked almost new with virtually no wear, so we decided to leave them alone. Unlike the old engine which looks awful in comparison (and not just the timing chains and guides Sad )

The 3 month warranty that the engine came with complicates matters as well, not sure how much internal work could be done before invalidating it. David

Well, found the cause of the engine failure!

The remains of the piston head were found in the intake manifold.

Cracked cylinder lining.

Hole through the cylinder wall in to the water jacket.

Now the engine is out, it shows all sorts of damage and abuse from previous owners and the piston is different from the other 7 and has obviously been replaced at some point. So an old repair that has let go? David
