G'day.
I own a 2005 L322 4.4 V8 and have recently had a '3 Amigo's' type issue.. HDC inactive, Air sus inactive and the central triangular alarm. The central alarm light was twitching a little before it went all out. I stopped the car and turned off the ignition, waited 30 seconds, then restarted.. no alarms. I drove for a little then used the brakes (as you do) when coming to a set of lights. The moment I touched the pedal the car behaved like it was loosing traction and engaging the ABS, or a similar feeling to using the HDC when you take your foot off the accelerator. Just a small jerky shunt of brakes (upon contact with the brake pedal) then all the alarms come up.. My thought is a wheel sensor not sending a pulse. Any one else had a similar experience and remedy..?? Thanx Matt.

I had a 2003 TD6 And kept getting the HDC inactive message on starting. After reading about all sorts of strange electrical behaviours on this and other forums, I fitted a brand new battery and all fixed. The old battery was holding charge and starting the car OK, but just a small drop in its power seems to cause this issue. Just my experience and opinion - it could be something else for you and there are many more experienced people on here than me.

Yup, most likely an ABS sensor or reluctor ring gone bad, given your symptoms.

Sometimes the old ABS sensors are seized in place and have to be drilled out, but you may be OK given Oz weather. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Could just be that the front tracking is way out.

I had this after a local garage bolloxed the tracking when fitting a new track rod and getting it properly set up cured the problem entirely.

I shall be looking into the whole reluctor ring / wheel sensor issue with my local Rangie shop very soon. Hope it doesn't cost me too much.

Just to add a quick check, pull the multiplug connector to the ABS ECU (front of the ABS pump block by the l/h suspension turret) and check for corrosion on the pins. Mine had this and caused similar symptoms.

Ok, all fixed.. $2200 later..
First alarm indicated the Steering angle sensor. Replaced that. something like $500 for the part only. Problem still there.
Next alarm was the Yaw sensor. Replaced that. Something like $250. Problem still there.
Then came the real culprit.. ABS modulator. The terminals were all corroded inside the plug causing short circuiting and responsible for the other associated components to fail.
The shorting was the cause for that very weird and dangerous 'locking up' of the ABS system while driving.
Luckily my Mech fitted a good 2nd hand modulator otherwise the above price would have been more than double that.
All good now.


mm289, U were right.. damn multiplug. would never have thought that could be so bad.

Trouble with mechanics replacing things in hope they fix things and they don't, so you pay for all those unnessecary parts you ddin't need..
