Seen a few threads on this groaning noise when turning the steering wheel in the fullfat but they all seem a few years old so thought id start a new one!

Few weeks back i noticed a groaning noise when turning the wheel at low speeds, was quite loud!. I checked the level of the fluid seemed a bit low so i bought the land rover recommended fluid and topped it up, noise was gone!

Last week went to drive and there was no power steering or at least it was intermittent, felt light when driving straight but over a hard corner i could barely move it.

Booked it into my local garage, they've advised me it could be the reservoir, the steering pump or the rack. If all of this needs doing it could potentially be a few thousand ! .

Has anyone else had this issue? RR is MY10 3.6TDV8.

I would change change PAS fluid an see if it helps.

I’ve had the reservoir replaced at £140 which didn’t work.

Been told the next thing to do is change the pump, which apparently houses the servotronic valve at a cost of just over £700 inc vat and labour, getting expensive !!

Apparently if the replacement pump doesn’t fix it then the steering rack will

If the fluid level is dropping presumably it is leaking out somewhere, you need to find where before replacing parts.

Oil coolers are very common for leaking

The servotonic valve is supposed to be on the drivers side of the steering rack AFAIK, so are you confident they garage have the capability to diagnose / do the work?
Do they have L322 specific diagnostic gear?
It should be possible to check bcu outputs & servotronic inputs before changing everything.

Thanks for the input everyone, my car is finally fixed!

For anyone that suffers these symptoms in the end it was the steering wheel pump. I replaced the reservoir and servotronic valve for good measure.

Could have saved a fair amount of money if i had taken it somewhere else/fixed it in the garage at home but work commitments and a holiday coming up meant i wanted it fixed quickly!

Fingers crossed for a few months of happy driving the beast
