Hi I have a 2005 (touch screen) and my automatic lights do not seem to work, if I put the switch to position 4 the lights come on regardless of the light conditions, I suspect the sensor has had it , but is it built into the rear view mirror , as this seems to have a sensor facing out towards the front of the car. Could it be a fuse?
Can you change just the sensor or do you have to change the whole rear view mirror, I have tried shining a torch at the sensor but the lights do not go off, do I need to shine the torch for any length of time before they should switch off. I apologise if there are previous posts on this but I could not find them .

Hi - I'm no expert but there should be two sensors behind your mirror I believe. 1 for rain sensor and the other for light. Not sure which way round they are. If it's the sensor then they are about £35 I believe to replace as I enquired about upgrading recently.

I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable will be along shortly to put you straight tho' Ash

As comports says - but to avoid confusion its not in the mirror housing, those sensors are for the dim dip. It's kinda under the mirror "foot" mounted to the screen. When you look at it from outside it looks red and shiny.

Have they ever worked - it could be a replacement screen has been fitted and they've about with the wires.

don’t know if a replacement screen has been fitted but I don’t think so, so the sensor is the black block glued to the windscreen if this needs changing then I guess as I have seen in some other postings you can buy one from the dealer test it in the car park and see if it works if not return it. My one question is how do you remove it from the windscreen and what do you use to re-attach it

my 2008 tdv8 is in again at stratstone for similar problem.
auto lights come on when weather is dull but do not turn off.
had windscreen module fitted but still same problem.
landrover have now got involved as vehicle is still under warranty..
hate to think how much it would cost if i was paying

Perhaps try a different dealer? One that knows what they are doing? 

I am having same problem and the question is how do you remove the plastic cowling to get to the sensor. The dealer told me that the rain and light sensor are one unit. Thx!Mike

Been to the dealer (had to order a sensor as they are not a stock item)
Replaced it using the Wiki no change the lights still come on regardless of the light conditions when the switch is in position 4
To add insult to injury the items that are ordered at the dealer and not stock items are non-returnable.
Any other ideas how I might cure this annoying problem

did you dis-connect the battery when you did the sensor job, if no then try that...

....and is the light sensor not incorporated with the wiper sensor, so does the wiper sensor work ok...

....and have you cleaned the windscreen where the sensor is...[i have to ask ] ... - .- -.

had the same problem... see my other reply....
stratstone have said they have cured the problem..
allegedly, where the sensor is stuck to the windscreen it was not on square and the gluey pad was partially obstructing the sensor....
we will wait and see when i get the car back

Thanks the wiper sensor does not seem to work either but unsure how the automatic bit works. Mine work when I turn them on but seem to work like ordinary intermittent wipers that are adjusted using the delay control time control and not dependant on water being present.
I will try disconnecting the battery and if that does not work shinning a torch into the sensor before I remount it on the screen (to try the misaligned theory) but all as this will have to wait for the weekend when I am home in the light - thanks for your suggestions

I just replaced the auto light/rain sensor (they are combined into one module) and still the lights do not come on after dark in the auto position. I replaced the fuse as well. I noticed Scary said to disconnect the battery. I did not do this. Can I/should I do it after I already installed it? Mike
