Has anyone fitted a Thule 900/XXL roof box to their L405?

Has anyone tried fitting a Thule Atlantis 900 or Thule Motion 900, or even a modern Thule Motion XT XXL box to the optional roof rails on their L405?

If so, does it fit happily without fouling the rear spoiler (when the tailgate is open), or overhanging the windscreen so far that it's a nuisance?

Thanks in advance for your help Thumbs Up

I haven't, but note that the LR Accessory catalogue says the max payload for the roof carrier is 75kg. There are three kinds of LR Accessory roof boxes which would not seem long enough to overhang at the front or prevent normal operation of the tailgate, probably a safer bet, though not cheap. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks for the reply Thumbs Up

I had seen those, but it's only these long Thule boxes that will give me a significant increase over the 440 litres in my current Thule 'box. I also really like the Thule boxes as they've really proven themselves to me over the last 10 years or more (has it really been that long?! Shocked )

The shame is that the roof rack on the D4 will take absolutely anything, but that was before Gerry "I hate roof racks and don't want them on my cars" McGovern had any influence! Big Cry

I've done the calculations and it would seem to fit. Order placed.

I'll post some photos up in October....

But, in the meantime, if anyone has ever fitted one, I'd love to hear from you Thumbs Up

Do you need step ladders to put stuff in them? It's a fair old height!

I've even been used to it on the Disco 4 (which is even taller Shocked ) and yes, it's a bit of a pain, but possible Thumbs Up

I use the step ladders to load and have either a step that we can put in the boot or, where we normally go on holiday, they are Land Rover people and they usually lend us their step ladders now! Very Happy

A small amount of progress here:

(The L322 may be shorter, but the roof is about the same length as the L405.)

I've just fitted the Thule Motion XT XXL (the really big, current, one) and for anyone who's considering doing the same:

1. The length and width of the Thule box are just fine, with an acceptable overhang at the front and plenty of clearance for the tailgate at the back.

2. It does mean that the sunroof can't be opened more than about a third, without the glass fowling the box's claws gripping the rear roof rail.

3. Yes, it's a very long way up (it seems worse than the Disco 4) and I do need something to stand on!

4. The design of the factory roof rails and the cross bars is very poor. while the quality of the attachment between the rails and the bars falls well short of what would be acceptable at Thule.

5. The old Thule 900 is a much better looking and more aerodynamic looking box, although they have improved on the latching and locking mechanism.

I've got about 270 miles to drive with it on Saturday, I'll see how it behaves.

I picked up my snow chains from a Thule dealer (will post up pics of road trip to the alps soon) - they told me that i could fit a roofbox onto my car even though it doesnt have the roof rails?? Has anyone done this? Current

Thule themselves have told me that’s it’s not possible to fit the necessary roof bars to a roof without rails fitted. Apparently the angle at the edge of the roof is too shallow to get a conventional Thule roof foot pack and grip to work. I’ve never found any other manufacturer make anything either. The only option seems to be to fit the outrageously expensive OEM roof rails and bars.

Perhaps you could ask your dealer to shed some light if he’s found a way of doing it that Thule aren’t aware of.

Red Merle, I quite like the look of your Silver Roof Rails. I was thinking of putting black ones on mine, as it's Carpathian with a black contrast roof - but the silver on yours looks good 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
